Sebago is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,911 at the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census. It is part of the Portland, Maine, Portland–South Portland, Maine, South Portland–Biddeford, Maine, Biddeford, Maine Portland-South Portland-Biddeford metropolitan area, metropolitan statistical area. History Originally called Flintstown, it was granted in 1774 by the Massachusetts General Court to survivors of Captain John Flint's company of soldiers from Concord, Massachusetts. It replaced a grant of 1735 that awarded them Township No. 3 (now Walpole, New Hampshire), but which was ruled invalid when the border between Massachusetts and New Hampshire was redrawn to satisfy prior claims by the descendants of John Mason (governor), John Mason. Sebago Lake is the deepest and second-largest lake in the U.S. state of Maine. The lake is deep at its deepest point, with a mean depth of . It is possible that Sebago is the deepest lake wholly contained within the entire New England region, although some sources say that Vermont's Lake Willoughby is slightly deeper. Sebago covers about in surface area, has a length of and has a shoreline length of roughly . The surface is around above sea level, so the deep bottom is below the present sea level. It is in Cumberland County, and bordered by the towns of Casco, Naples, Raymond, Sebago, Standish and Windham. The seasonally occupied town of Frye Island is on an island in the lake. Sebago Lake State Park is a public recreation area encompassing on the north shore of Sebago Lake in the New England town, towns of Naples, Maine, Naples and Casco, Maine, Casco, Cumberland County, Maine, Cumberland County, Maine. It opened in 1938 as one of Maine's original five state parks. The mostly forested park is divided into east and west sections by the Songo River. It is managed by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. Activities and amenities The park offers 250 campsites in two campgrounds, Naples Beach and Witch Cove, each with beaches and boat ramps. Boating and swimming are also available at the day-use area in the park's east section. Other park features include hiking trails and roadway biking. Lake Sebago
At , Lake Sebago, near Sloatsburg, is the largest lake in Harriman State Park in the U.S. state of New York. The name is Algonquian for "big water". It is located just south of Lake Kanawauke and is accessible via Seven Lakes Drive and the Palisades Interstate Parkway. New Sebago Beach opened in the 1940s but closed in 2011 due to damage from Hurricane Irene, and the picnic areas closed in 2012 due to Hurricane Sandy. History The lake was created in 1925 by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission under William A. Welch by building a dam across Stony Brook. The lake filled the former site of Johnsontown—a logging settlement founded in the mid-1700s in the Stony Brook valley. By the early 1900s, Johnsontown was the largest mountain settlement in the western part of the Ramapos.
