Seattle Film Critics Society
The Seattle Film Critics Society (SFCS), founded by Matt Oakes, is represented by over 40 members in print, radio, television and online mediums who live and work in the greater Seattle area. Established in 2016, the society is dedicated to supporting local productions and festivals, enhancing public education, awareness, and appreciation of cinema, and strengthening the bonds of critical dialogue as it pertains to the cinematic arts. They seek to highlight the best films produced each year–both by the major studios and independent filmmakers–and share their love of cinema with Seattle-area residents. The SFCS formalizes an already robust network of film critics and reviewers in Seattle and surrounding areas of Washington State. The society also presents an annual awards announcement, honoring the best achievements in film, nominated and selected by all active members of the society. Film criticism is the analysis and evaluation of films and the film medium. In general, film criticism can be divided into two categories: Journalism, journalistic criticism that appears regularly in newspapers, magazines and other popular mass-media outlets; and academic criticism by film scholars who are informed by film theory and are published in academic journals. Academic film criticism rarely takes the form of a review; instead it is more likely to analyse the film and its place in the history of its genre or in the whole of History of film, film history. ''Phantom Thread'' is a 2017 American historical drama film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, and starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Vicky Krieps and Lesley Manville. Set in 1950s London, it stars Day-Lewis as an haute couture dressmaker who takes a young waitress, played by Krieps, as his muse. It marked Day-Lewis's final film role to date. Barry Jenkins (born November 19, 1979) is an American filmmaker. After making his filmmaking debut with the short film ''My Josephine'' (2003), he directed his first feature film ''Medicine for Melancholy'' (2008) for which he received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Feature. He is also a member of The Chopstars collective as a creative collaborator. Following an eight-year hiatus from feature filmmaking, Jenkins directed and co-wrote the LGBT-themed independent drama '' Moonlight'' (2016), which won numerous accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Picture. Jenkins received an Oscar nomination for Best Director and jointly won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay with Tarell Alvin McCraney. 2022 Seattle Film Critics Society Awards
The 7th Seattle Film Critics Society Awards will be announced on January 17, 2023. The nominations were announced on January 9, 2023, with ''Everything Everywhere All at Once'' leading the nominations with fourteen, followed by ''The Banshees of Inisherin'' with nine and ''Top Gun: Maverick'' with eight. The awards were dedicated this year to Sheila Benson (''Los Angeles Times'') and John Hartl (''The Seattle Times''), two of the "finest" film critics to live and work in the Pacific Northwest. After her retirement from the ''Los Angeles Times'' in 1991, Benson wrote for several print publications and websites, at both the local and national level, while Hartl was a Seattle icon who spent his entire 52-year career writing for ''The Seattle Times''.
