''Season of Lights... Laura Nyro in Concert'' is the first live album by American singer-songwriter Laura Nyro. Overview Columbia Records issued the album in the summer of 1977, taking the songs from various locations on Nyro's 1976 tour in support of her most recent studio album, ''Smile''. Although the album had no strict producer, Nyro is credited as the "musical director." Dale Ashby was engineer and mixer, assisted by Don Pulse and Ken Robertson. The album documents Nyro's first full-band tour, with her playing guitar, piano, and other keyboards, backed by a group of musicians including John Tropea on guitar and Richard Davis on bass. The atmosphere of the album is laidback, smooth, and jazz-inspired, musically similar to the explorations on ''Smile''. "And When I Die" is a song written by American singer and songwriter Laura Nyro. It was first recorded by the folk group Peter, Paul and Mary in 1966. Nyro released her own version on her debut album ''More Than a New Discovery'' in February 1967. The song is best known for the next version, recorded by the jazz-rock group Blood, Sweat & Tears in late 1968. This recording reached No. 2 on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and became a Gold record. Michael T. Mainieri Jr. (born July 4, 1938) is an American vibraphonist, known for his work with the jazz fusion group Steps Ahead. He is married to the singer-songwriter and harpist Dee Carstensen. Biography Mainieri was born in The Bronx, New York, United States. Mainieri was a pioneer in introducing an electronic vibraphone, known as a synth-vibe, and has recorded with such musicians as Buddy Rich, Wes Montgomery and Jeremy Steig. ''New York Tendaberry'' is the third album by New York City-born singer, songwriter and pianist Laura Nyro. It was released in the autumn of 1969, on Columbia Records, some eighteen months after its predecessor, ''Eli and the Thirteenth Confession''. It was helmed by her, with the assistance of producer and engineer Roy Halee. The cover photograph was taken by David Gahr. ''New York Tendaberry'' is also considered to be the second in a trilogy of classic original Nyro records, with ''Eli'' and '' Christmas and the Beads of Sweat'' on either side. They are all considered musically and thematically similar, although ''New York Tendaberry'' is the most intense and stark. ''Christmas and the Beads of Sweat'' is the fourth album by New York-born singer, songwriter, and pianist Laura Nyro. The album was released on the Columbia Records label in November 1970 after Nyro had recorded it in the early summer with producers Felix Cavaliere and Arif Mardin. Whilst Nyro had handed over production reins, she was still in control of the project and co-arranged her compositions. The album is the closing part of a trilogy that also comprises 1968's ''Eli and the Thirteenth Confession'' and 1969's '' New York Tendaberry''. Musically, the album is a bridge between the two, balancing the lighter and more joyful tones of ''Eli'' with the dark, sensual, and piano-dominated ''Tendaberry''. ''More Than a New Discovery'' is the debut album by Bronx-born singer, songwriter, and pianist Laura Nyro. It was recorded during 1966 and released early in following year on the Verve Folkways imprint of the Verve Records label. The name of the label was later changed to Verve Forecast and the album was re-issued on that label as ''The First Songs'' in 1969. This re-issue has a different track order and revised cover design. It peaked at #97 on the ''Billboard'' 200, then known as the Pop Albums chart. Starting with this release the song "Hands Off the Man" was retitled " Flim Flam Man (Hands Off the Man)". Columbia Records re-issued ''The First Songs'' with all-new cover art (featuring a rose illustration) in 1973. In 1999, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. ''Eli and the Thirteenth Confession'' is the second album by New York City-born singer, songwriter, and pianist Laura Nyro, released in 1968. History Nyro premiered some of the songs that were to appear on the album at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. The song "Luckie" was derived from an earlier composition Nyro had played at her audition for Verve Records in 1966. Before she signed to Columbia Records, Verve had already planned to release the album, under the title ''Soul Picnic''. The album saw its actual release in 1968 on the Columbia label and became one of the year's underground successes. The album was written entirely by Nyro, arranged by Charlie Calello and produced by both. The front cover was taken by Bob Cato.
