Searcy, Arkansas
Searcy ( ) is the largest city and county seat of White County, Arkansas, United States. According to 2019 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 23,767. It is the principal city of the Searcy, AR Micropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses all of White County. The city takes its name from Richard Searcy, a judge for the Superior Court of the Arkansas Territory. A college town, Searcy is the home of Harding University and ASU-Searcy. History Originally named White Sulphur Springs, the town's name was changed in 1837, two years after White County was created. The state changed the county seat name to honor Richard Searcy (1794-1832), a prominent Arkansas Legislator. The town contained a health spa from its conception until 1820, when the alum, chalybeate, and white sulphur springs for which the spa was known dried up. George Henry Grass Searcy (15 January 1855 – 6 January 1927) was an Australian sportsman, sports official and accountant. Family Searcy was born on 15 January 1855 in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, the son of Frederick Searcy and Dinah formerly Simmonds née Grass. His father, and uncle William, had arrived at Port Adelaide on 3 September 1849, on the ship ''Louisa Baillie''. William Steven Searcy (born June 4, 1964) is an American former professional baseball pitcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies. Early years Though he is naturally right handed, Searcy was born with osteomyelitis in his right shoulder. Thus, he does some tasks with his left hand, including throwing a baseball. Hailing from Knoxville, Tennessee, Searcy attended the University of Tennessee. Robert Searcy
Robert J. Searcy (1921 – September 17, 2009) was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African American military personnel who served with distinction during World War II as the 332nd Fighter Group of the US Army Air Corps. After the war, Searcy lived in Los Angeles, California. He died of colorectal cancer in September 2009 at age 88. Tuskegee Airmen Searcy was born in Mount Pleasant, Texas, and attended Prairie View A&M University before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 following the United States' entry into World War II. Searcy received basic training at Ft. Hood, Texas, and was assigned to lead a group of airmen to Tuskegee, Alabama. He later recalled receiving his first taste of segregation when his men were denied access to the Pullman car's dining and sleeping quarters on the train to Tuskegee. Peter Searcy is a musician from Louisville, Kentucky. Spin Magazine, Scott Irwin, and Amanda Green have compared Searcy's straightforward songwriting style and voice to those of Paul Westerberg. Like Paul Westerberg of The Replacements, Searcy is a veteran of the hardcore scene. Searcy was the frontman of the Louisville hardcore punk group Squirrel Bait in the 1980s. After Squirrel Bait disbanded, Searcy (along with Squirrel Bait drummer Ben Daughtrey) formed a funk-rock group called Fanci Pantz. Fanci Pantz garnered a lot of praise and major label attention, but they broke up before they could record an album. Leon Searcy (born December 21, 1969) is an American football coach and former player. He currently works as a radio personality in Jacksonville, Florida. Searcy is a former NFL offensive lineman who played primarily for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Jacksonville Jaguars in an 11-year career spanning from 1992 to 2002. He was drafted in the first-round and 11th overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers following his graduation from the University of Miami in the 1992 NFL Draft. This was the first draft pick in the post-Chuck Noll era. Beginning in 1993 (his second year), Searcy was installed at the right tackle position. He stayed in this position until he left the team for the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent in 1996.
