Seatrain (band)
Seatrain was an American roots fusion band based initially in Marin County, California, and later in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Seatrain was formed in 1969, subsequently drawing some members from the Blues Project when it broke up. Seatrain recorded four albums and disbanded in 1973. Band history Flutist/bassist Andy Kulberg and drummer Roy Blumenfeld of Blues Project formed the band with Jim Roberts, ex-Mystery Trend guitarist John Gregory, former Blue Grass Boy and Jim Kweskin Jug Band violinist/fiddler Richard Greene, and saxophonist Don Kretmar. Seatrain recorded their first album, ''Planned Obsolescence'', in 1968, but had to release it as a Blues Project album for contractual reasons. Fusion (music)
A music genre is a conventional category that identifies some pieces of music as belonging to a shared tradition or set of conventions. It is to be distinguished from ''musical form'' and musical style, although in practice these terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Music can be divided into genres in varying ways, such as popular music and art music, or religious music and secular music. ''Seatrain'' is the second album by the band Seatrain, recorded in 1970 and adding Peter Rowan on guitar and lead vocals. The most successful song on this album is "13 Questions", which reached #49 in the Billboard charts. The album is notable for being the first record produced by George Martin after his work with The Beatles as well as marking an early appearance of the Little Feat classic " Willin'" prior to its appearance on that band's debut album. Blues Project
The Blues Project is a band from the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City that was formed in 1965 and originally split up in 1967. Their songs drew from a wide array of musical styles. They are most remembered as one of the most artful practitioners of pop music, influenced as it was by folk, blues, rhythm & blues, jazz and the pop music of the day. Career In 1964, Elektra Records produced a compilation album of various artists entitled, ''The Blues Project'', which featured several white musicians from the Greenwich Village area who played acoustic blues music in the style of black musicians. One of the featured artists on the album was a young guitarist named Danny Kalb, who was paid $75 for his two songs. Richard Greene (musician)
Richard Greene (born November 9, 1942) is an American violinist who has been described as "one of the most innovative and influential fiddle players of all time". Greene is credited with introducing the chop to fiddle playing while working with Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys, the invention of which he attributes to pain in his wrist and arm and "laziness". He featured the technique in his performances with Seatrain. Biography Greene was born in Beverly Hills and grew up in Los Angeles. He began studying classical music at age 5 but turned to folk music by high school. After entering the University of California, Berkeley, he joined the Coast Mountain Ramblers and later the Dry City Scat Band, led by guitarist David Lindley. Andy Kulberg
Andy Kulberg (April 30, 1944 – January 28, 2002) was an American musician notable for his bass playing with the groups Blues Project and Seatrain. He was born in Buffalo, New York, and grew up in Amherst, New York. In 1965, he became a founding member of the "Blues Project", a popular New York City folk rock band, along with Al Kooper, Danny Kalb, Steve Katz and Roy Blumenfeld. Kulberg was the band's bass guitarist, also known for his electric flute virtuosity. He later was a member of "Seatrain" which he formed with Blumenfeld after the breakup of Blues Project in early 1969. Peter Rowan and Richard Greene were among the members of Seatrain.
