Sde David
Sde David (, ''lit.'' David's Field) is a moshav in southern Israel. Located in Hevel Lakhish, it falls under the jurisdiction of Lakhish Regional Council. In it had a population of . History The moshav was founded in 1955 by Jewish immigrants from the Moroccan youth movement HaNoar HaTzioni, as part of the effort to settle the region. It was named after Zalman David Levontin, a Russian banker, pioneer of Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel and the founder and director of the Anglo-Palestine Bank (which later became Bank Leumi). Sde David was founded in 1955 on land belonging to the depopulated Palestinian village of Burayr Burayr ( ar, برير) was a Palestinian Arab village in the Gaza Subdistrict, northeast of Gaza City. Lakhish Regional Council ( he, מועצה אזורית לכיש, ''Mo'atza Azorit Lakhish'') is a regional council (Israel), regional council in the Southern District (Israel), Southern District of Israel. It surrounds the ancient city of Lachish, Lakhish and the modern city of Kiryat Gat. It was founded in 1955. Today it includes 15 moshavim and one village, as listed below. As of 2008, three new communities are being built in eastern Lakhish, and some old communities are being expanded. Rabbis Shabtai Ben Hayyim and Ya'akov Alkabetz serve as rabbis of the council. Moshavim
A moshav ( he, מוֹשָׁב, plural ', lit. ''settlement, village'') is a type of Israeli town or settlement, in particular a type of cooperative agricultural community of individual farms settler, pioneered by the Labor Zionism, Labour Zionists between 1904 and 1914, during what is known as the Second Aliyah, second wave of ''aliyah''. A resident or a member of a moshav can be called a "moshavnik" (). The moshavim are similar to kibbutzim with an emphasis on community labour. They were designed as part of the Zionist state-building programme following the green revolution Yishuv ("settlement") in the Mandatory Palestine, British Mandate of Palestine during the early 20th century, but in contrast to the collective farming kibbutzim, farms in a moshav tended to be individually owned but of fixed and equal size. The Institute for Palestine Studies (IPS) is the oldest independent nonprofit public service research institute in the Arab world.
