Scriba, New York
Scriba is a town in Oswego County, New York, United States. The population was 6,840 at the 2010 census. The town is named after landowner George Scriba. The Town of Scriba is east of the City of Oswego. The town was created in 1811 from the Town of Volney, then known as the Town of Fredericksburg. The town of Scriba includes an Oswego County fire department, a municipal building, highway department, justice center, buildings and grounds department and a water department, as well as a child care center, town park and sunset bay park with lake access. The Nine Mile Point Nuclear Generating Station and the James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant are both also located within the towns territory. A scrivener (or scribe) was a person who could read and write or who wrote letters to court and legal documents. Scriveners were people who made their living by writing or copying written material. This usually indicated secretarial and administrative duties such as dictation and keeping business, judicial, and historical records for kings, nobles, temples, and cities. Scriveners later developed into public servants, accountants, lawyers and petition writers, and in England and Wales, scrivener notaries. Scriba (ancient Rome)
In ancient Rome, the ''scriba'' (Latin, plural ''scribae'') was a public notary or clerk (see also scrivener). The public scribes were the highest in rank of the four prestigious occupational grades (''decuriae'') among the ''apparitores'', the attendants of the magistrates who were paid from the state treasury. The word ''scriba'' might also refer to a man who was a private secretary, but should be distinguished from a copyist (who might be called a "scribe" in English) or bookseller (''librarius''). In Rome the ''scribae'' worked out of the ''aerarium'', the state treasury and government archive. They received a good salary, but could earn additional commissions for collecting and recording state revenues, and making official copies of government documents and decrees. The Roman posting was such a lucrative assignment that the ''scribae'' worked in rotations, serving one year in Rome and two in the provinces.
