Screven County High School is a public high school located in Sylvania, Georgia, United States. The school is part of the Screven County School System, which serves Screven County. The school offers athletics, band, and a quizbowl team along with many clubs, such as Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), National FFA Organization, Rotary Service Club, National Honor Society, Skills USA, German Club, Spanish Club, Student Government, Technology Student Association (TSA), Y-Club, and 4-H Club. Sylvania, Georgia
Sylvania is a town in and the county seat of Screven County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,956 at the 2010 census. History The area was inhabited for thousands of years by various cultures of indigenous peoples. By the time of European encounter, it was occupied by the Yuchi peoples, but some Creeks, the Uchee's allies, moved into the area during Colonial times. The town of Sylvania was founded in 1790 by settlers migrating to the area after the American Revolutionary War. The word "Sylvania" comes from the Latin word ''sylvan'' or '' sylva '' which means "forest land" or "place in the woods." Sylvania was part of the Black Belt of Georgia, developed for cultivation after the cotton gin made it easier to handle short-fiber cotton. Screven County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,067. The county seat is Sylvania. History The county was created on December 14, 1793, and was named for General James Screven, who died fighting in Georgia during the American Revolutionary War. Some wartime accounts used the alternate spelling of "Scriven" for the general, and the county's name was often spelled that way in its early history, as reflected on 19th-century Georgia maps. Sylvania became the county seat in 1847, moved from Jacksonborough, by an act of State legislation.
