Norton Bavant
Norton Bavant is a small village and civil parish in Wiltshire, England, southeast of Warminster. Geography The village is on the River Wylye and at the edge of Salisbury Plain. To the north lies Scratchbury and Cotley Hills Site of Special Scientific Interest, and the Iron Age hillfort of Scratchbury Camp. The A36 road to Salisbury bypasses the village to the south, on the other side of the river. The earlier direct route of the road, just north of the village, is now the B3414. The Wessex Main Line railway between Warminster and Salisbury, opened 1856, follows the river valley and crosses the parish to the north and east of the village. The local station at Heytesbury was closed in 1955. History Domesday Book of 1086 recorded a settlement with 22 households at ''Nortone''. Scratchbury Camp
Scratchbury Camp is the site of an Iron Age univallate hillfort on Scratchbury Hill, overlooking the River Wylye, Wylye valley about 1 km northeast of the village of Norton Bavant in Wiltshire, England. The fort covers an area of and occupies the summit of the hill on the edge of Salisbury Plain, with its four-sided shape largely following the natural contours of the hill. The Iron Age Britain, Iron Age hillfort dates to around 100 BC, but contains the remains of an earlier and smaller D-shaped Enclosure (archaeology), enclosure or camp. The age of this earlier earthwork is currently subject to debate, and has been variously interpreted due to the inconclusive and incomplete nature of previous and differing excavation records; it may be early Iron Age dating to around 250 BC, but it has also been interpreted as being Bronze Age Britain, Bronze Age, dating to around 2000 BC. __NOTOC__ The following is a list of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) in Wiltshire, England, United Kingdom. In England the body responsible for designating SSSIs is Natural England, which chooses a site because of its fauna, flora, geological or physiographical features. As of 2006, there are 134 sites designated in this Area of Search, of which the vast majority, 108, have been designated due to their biological interest, with just 21 due to their geological interest (and 5 for both). Natural England took over the role of designating and managing SSSIs from English Nature in October 2006 when it was formed from the amalgamation of English Nature, parts of the Countryside Agency and the Rural Development Service.
