Scouting Ireland
Scouting Ireland ( ga, Gasóga na hÉireann) is one of the largest youth movements on the island of Ireland, a voluntary educational movement for young people with over 45,000 members, including over 11,000 adult volunteers . Of the 750,000 people between the ages of 6 and 18 in Ireland, over 6% are involved with the organisation. It was founded in 2004, following the amalgamation of two of the Scouting organisations on the island. It is the World Organization of the Scout Movement-recognised Scouting association in the Republic of Ireland. In Northern Ireland it operates alongside The Scout Association of the UK and the Baden-Powell Scout Association. The organisation is independent, non-political, and open to all young people without distinction of origin, race, creed, sexual orientation, spiritual belief or gender, in accordance with the purpose, principles and method conceived by Robert Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell, Lord Baden-Powell and as stated by WOSM. Larch Hill
Larch Hill International Scout and Guide Centre is the national campsite, and administrative and training headquarters of Scouting Ireland. It was previously owned by Scouting Ireland (CSI). Overview Larch Hill was purchased in 1937 and has gone on to become one of the main hubs of European Scout camping. The estate has been revitalised in recent years with the creation of Scouting Ireland in 2004. The architecturally unique headquarters building remains the focal point of Larch Hill. At 226 metres above sea level, the site consists of camping fields, a small hostel, conference facilities (in the Millennium Room), hiking trails, a nature centre, a Beaver Scout playground, a (currently derelict) swimming pool and a large campfire circle. Beaver Scouts (Scouting Ireland)
Beaver Scouts (commonly known as ''Beavers'') are the youngest age group in Scouting Ireland, being boys and girls aged between 6 and 8 years of age. The personal progressive scheme is broken down into three stages 'Bree' (Year 1) 'Ruairc' (Year 2) and 'Conn', while Adventure skills, Special Interest Badges and the Chief Scout Award also form part of the progress scheme. Structure A group of Beavers is called a Beaver Scout Colony. The colony is run by a team of Programme Scouters (often with a "Section Leader" as the head) and often Venture Scouts. Scout Hall
A Scout hall (also Scout hut, Scout den or Scout headquarters) is a building owned or rented and used as a meeting place by a Scout Group. General description A Scout hall typically consists of one or more large rooms which are used for games and Scouting activities, and may also include smaller rooms for committee meetings, storage of camping equipment and a kitchen. When not being used for Scouting, Scout halls are often hired to other community groups, in a similar way to a village hall or community centre. If the Scout hall consists of several large rooms, the various sections can have their own large room. Rooms for younger sections, such as Beaver Scouts, Rainbow Guides, Cub Scouts and Brownie Guides, are decorated with pictures and objects from their theme. Sea Scouting ( ga, Gasógaíacht Mhara) has existed in Ireland since 1912 and is a programme framework within Scouting Ireland. Sea Scouting Groups in Ireland operate the same as every other Scout Group in the Country. Some say Sea Scouts are just a little more magic than the rest but the only real difference is Sea Scouting Groups have a stronger committment to water safety, seamanship training and activities on the water. Rover Scouts (Scouting Ireland)
Rover Scouts in Scouting Ireland are aged between 18 and 26 years of age. It is a new section and is being set up in many universities around the country. The main activity done in the Rover Section is the Explorer Belt but there are a number of other activities that Rover Scouts are involved in, such as International Service Projects. Explorer Belt The Explorer Belt was traditionally linked to the Venture Scout Section, but since the introduction of ONE Programme the Explorer Belt is now done by Rover Scouts. Rover Scouts, in teams of two, walk a distance of at least 200 km in 10 days completing tasks along the way. These tasks include maintaining a log of the journey, consisting of a daily route, menu, budget and account of the day's activities.
