Of the 102 counties of the state of Illinois, 84 are organized into civil townships, usually referred to as simply "townships" in state law. Illinois has 1,428 such townships. The primary industry is agriculture, consisting of crops of corn (maize), soybeans, and some wheat. History The region was inhabited by Illinoisan Indians when the first white explorers arrived.
