Scotti Family
The Scotti is an aristocratic family centered around Piacenza in Northern Italy. The family is also known as also known as ''Douglas Scotti'' for claiming descendancy from the Scottish Clan Douglas. History Legne holds that a knight from the Douglas Clan came from Scotland to fight the under Charlemagne and against the Lombards. After his service, he putatively settled in Piacenza. However little documentation affirms this legend. The first documentation of a Scotti is of Rainaldo in 1184 serving as a consul of the collegio dei mercanti (guild of merchants). The Guelph-leaning Scotti family was often in conflict or competition with the Ghibelline Piacentine family of the Anguissola. Piacenza
Piacenza (; egl, label= Piacentino, Piaṡëinsa ; ) is a city and in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, and the capital of the eponymous province. As of 2022, Piacenza is the ninth largest city in the region by population, with over 102,000 inhabitants. Fiorenzuola d'Arda (; egl, label= Piacentino, Fiurinsöla, or ) is a city and ''comune'' in Italy in the province of Piacenza, part of the Emilia-Romagna region. Gianbernardino Scotti
Gianbernardino Scotti (died 1568) was an Italian Roman Catholic bishop and cardinal. Biography Gianbernardino Scotti was born in Magliano Sabina ca. 1478, the son of a noble family that had lived there for 400 years. He was an expert in Greek, Hebrew, Chaldean, and in canon law. He entered the order of the Theatines in 1525, and is believed to be the first man to receive the Theatine habit. He was subsequently ordained as a priest. In 1548, he accompanied Luigi Lippomano, Bishop of Verona during the bishop's nunciature in Germany. Returning from Germany, he moved to Venice to continue his studies. In 1555, Pope Paul IV, one of the founders of the Theatine Order, summoned Scotti to Rome, making him Archbishop of Trani and cardinal priest in the consistory of 20 December 1555. Estorre Visconti, or Astorre according to other sources (13467 January 1413), was one of the many illegitimate sons of the famous Bernabò Visconti, Lord of Milan and already deposed by his nephew Gian Galeazzo Visconti in 1385. Biography Born in Milan, son of Barnabò and Beltramola de' Grassi, Estorre in 1404 had received as its domain the Lordship of Martinengo and Morengo. San Giovanni In Canale, Piacenza
San Giovanni in Canale is a Gothic-style Roman Catholic church in central Piacenza, formerly associated with a Dominican monastery. History The Dominican order arrived in Piacenza in 1220 and donations from those living next to the Rio Beverora (an Ancient Roman canal that flowed into the Po River, allowed them to establish their base here, and while they dedicated the church to St John, this church was called “in canale” to distinguish it from a similarly dedicated temple. This Dominican complex once housed the Inquisition tribunal. The structure, including the facade were rebuilt in 1522 in a Gothic style, with a large rose window. The church was suppressed by the French in 1797. The interior has 14th century tombs of the Scotti family. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the interior was decorated in Rococo style with stucco and gilding. Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund
Sigismund of Luxembourg (15 February 1368 – 9 December 1437) was a monarch as King of Hungary and Croatia (''jure uxoris'') from 1387, King of Germany from 1410, King of Bohemia from 1419, and Holy Roman Emperor from 1433 until his death in 1437, as well as prince-elector of Brandenburg (1378–1388 and 1411–1415). He was the last male member of the House of Luxembourg. Sigismund was the son of Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV and his fourth wife Elizabeth of Pomerania. He married Queen Mary of Hungary in 1385 and was crowned King of Hungary soon after. He fought to restore and maintain authority to the throne.
