West Finley Township is a township in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 813 at the 2020 census. History The Crawford Covered Bridge, Danley Covered Bridge, Erskine Covered Bridge, and Longdon L. Miller Covered Bridge are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 39.1 square miles (101.3 km2), all of it land. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 951 people, 338 households, and 267 families living in the township. The population density was 24.3 people per square mile (9.4/km2). There were 374 housing units at an average density of 9.6/sq mi (3.7/km2). The racial makeup of the township was 98.84% White, 0.11% Native American, 0.21% Asian, and 0.84% from two or more races. A covered bridge is a timber-truss bridge with a roof, decking, and siding, which in most covered bridges create an almost complete enclosure. The purpose of the covering is to protect the wooden structural members from the weather. Uncovered wooden bridges typically have a lifespan of only 20 years because of the effects of rain and sun, but a covered bridge could last over 100 years. In the United States, only about 1 in 10 survived the 20th century. The relatively small number of surviving bridges is due to deliberate replacement, neglect, and the high cost of restoration. Washington County History & Landmarks Foundation is a Non-profit organization, non-profit educational institution in Washington, Pennsylvania. Its purpose is to encourage and assist the preservation of historic structures in Washington County, Pennsylvania. The foundation operates its own landmark certification process, as well as working with the National Park Service to document and place landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places.
