The Soft Bulletin
''The Soft Bulletin'' is the ninth studio album by American rock band the Flaming Lips, released by Warner Bros. Records on May 17, 1999, in the United Kingdom, and on June 22, 1999, in the United States. The album was released to widespread acclaim, and was hailed by critics as a departure from their previous guitar-heavy alternative rock sound into a more layered, intricately arranged work. Music and lyrics The album was considered to mark a change in the course for the band, with more traditional catchy melodies, accessible-sounding music (their previous album ''Zaireeka'' was a quadruple album of experimental sounds meant to be played on four separate stereo systems simultaneously), and more serious and thoughtful lyrics. The album was also noted for its fusion of ordinary rock instruments, electronic beats, and synthesizers. Its large, layered, symphonic sound has also earned it a reputation as the ''Pet Sounds'' of the 1990s from a few critics. This sound was achieved in par ... She Don't Use Jelly
"She Don't Use Jelly" is a song by American rock band the Flaming Lips from their sixth studio album, ''Transmissions from the Satellite Heart'' (1993). It reached number 55 on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and became a top-30 hit in Australia. Music and lyrics Discussing the song, the band's website states, "With its chiming pedal steel chorus breaks and seemingly nonsensical lyrics, the song entered into the realms of novelty hit. It's a happy little ditty about strange people and their individual idiosyncrasies, with pretty melodies laced throughout and punctuated by trademark moments of crunching but still harmonious noise." The song describes a woman who "thinks of ghosts" and puts Vaseline on toast, a man who "goes to shows" and uses magazines to blow his nose, and another woman that "reminds he narratorof Cher" and uses tangerines to make her hair orange. Coyne has stated, "The song came to me very quickly, and I thought it was sort of funny." Reception and legacy "She D ... ''Hit to Death in the Future Head'' is the fifth studio album by American rock band the Flaming Lips, released on August 11, 1992, by Warner Bros. Records. "Talkin' 'Bout the Smiling Deathporn Immortality Blues (Everyone Wants to Live Forever)" was released as the lead track on the EP '' Yeah, I Know It's a Drag... But Wastin' Pigs Is Still Radical'' to promote the album. The title provided the inspiration for the name of the British band the Futureheads. Recording and release Recorded in 1991 by the same lineup that had been featured on '' In a Priest Driven Ambulance'', the album's release was delayed for nearly a year due to the use of a sample from Michael Kamen's score for the film ''Brazil'' in the track "You Have to Be Joking (Autopsy of the Devil's Brain)", which required a lengthy clearance process. During the intervening period, both Nathan Roberts and Jonathan Donahue left the band (the latter resuming his duties in Mercury Rev). By the time of the album's release ...
