The Scotland national speedway team were one of the teams that competed in international team motorcycle speedway. Scottish riders now compete for the Great Britain team. History The Scotland speedway team first competed in international competition in test matches during 1928. They continued to hold test matches every decade until their pool of riders diminished during the mid-1980s. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . Poland National Speedway Team
The Poland national speedway team is the national motorcycle speedway team of Poland and is controlled by the Polish Motor Union ( PZM). The team is one of the major teams in international speedway and they won the Team World Championship nine times (last time in 2009 and 2010). The team has won 1971 Speedway World Pairs Championship also. Ross Gilbertson
Vernon Walter Ross Gilbertson (2 February 1931 – 8 February 2009) was a motorcycle speedway rider from Scotland. Career Gilbertson started racing in the British leagues during the 1954 Southern Area League, when riding for the California Poppies and helped them win the league title. He rode for California during both the 1955 and 1956 seasons, improving his average significantly to 9.00 in 1956. In 1957, California switched their promotion to Aldershot Shots and Gilbertson recorded an even better average of 9.30. This led to him to being signed by Southampton Saints in the top league for the 1958 Speedway National League. He also doubled up for Eastbourne Eagles in the Southern Area League, where he helped the south coast club win the league title in 1959. In 1960, he rode for Southampton in the National League, Poole Pirates in the Provincial League and won the Southern Area League Riders' Championship representing Eastbourne. Jim Gallacher (speedway Rider)
James Gallacher (born 29 March 1951) is a Scottish former football goalkeeper. Gallacher played for Arbroath and Clydebank in the Scottish Football League. He made over 600 league appearances for the ''Bankies'' in a career that spanned four decades (late 1960s to early 1990s) and was fondly known as 'Easy the Gal' by the club's supporters. He followed his playing career at New Kilbowie Park by coaching the club's goalkeepers until 1997. Then followed a spell from 2001 until 2008 coaching with the Scotland Women's National team. Brian Collins (speedway Rider)
Brian Collins (born 13 May 1948 in Edinburgh, Scotland) is a former motorcycle speedway rider. Career Collins spent the first four years of his British speedway career with Edinburgh Monarchs from 1966 to 1969, although they were known as Coatbridge from 1968 to 1969. In 1968, he top scored for Scotland against England in a test match. In 1970 and 1971, he rode for Wembley after the London team bought the Coatbridge licence before moving on to Poole Pirates for two years. He joined the Coatbridge/Glasgow Tigers in 1974 and won the Scottish Open Champion in 1975. Also in 1975, Collins finished runner up in the 1975 The National League Riders Championship at Wimbledon. John Robert Thompson Beaton (born 14 May 1952) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from Scotland. Speedway Grand Prix
Speedway Grand Prix are a series of stand-alone motorcycle speedway events over the course of a season used to determine the Speedway World Champion. The series started in 1995 replacing the previous format of a single event final. The first winner was Hans Nielsen of Denmark. Event format The format for a Grand Prix changed for the 2007 season onwards. Sixteen riders take part in each Grand Prix and over the course of twenty heats each rider will race against every other rider once. The top eight scorers advance to a semi-final and from each semi-final the 1st and 2nd placed riders will advance to the GP final. Australia National Speedway Team
Australia is one of the major teams in international motorcycle speedway with the country regarded as the birthplace of the sport in the 1920s. The current team is managed by former rider Mark Lemon, and captained by 2012 World Champion Chris Holder.
