Scotland at the 1994 Commonwealth Games was represented by the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland (CGCE). Scotland joined the Commonwealth of Nations as part of the United Kingdom in 1931. Commonwealth Games Scotland
A commonwealth is a traditional English term for a political community founded for the common good. Historically, it has been synonymous with "republic". The noun "commonwealth", meaning "public welfare, general good or advantage", dates from the 15th century. Originally a phrase (the common-wealth or the common wealth – echoed in the modern synonym "public wealth"), it comes from the old meaning of "wealth", which is "well-being", and is itself a loose translation of the Latin res publica (republic). The term literally meant "common well-being". In the 17th century, the definition of "commonwealth" expanded from its original sense of "public welfare" or "commonweal" to mean "a state in which the supreme power is vested in the people; a republic or democratic state". Yvonne Murray
Yvonne Carole Grace Murray-Mooney (née Murray, born 4 October 1964), is a Scottish former middle-distance and long-distance track and road-running athlete. She won a bronze medal in the 3000 metres at the 1988 Olympic Games, and gold medals at this distance at the 1987 European Indoor Championships, the 1993 World Indoor Championships and the 1990 European Championships. She also won a gold medal in the 10,000 metres at the 1994 Commonwealth Games. Her 3000 metres best of 8:29.02 was set in the Olympic Final of 1988. Biography Yvonne Murray was born on 4 October 1964 in Musselburgh, East Lothian, Scotland. Murray was initially a Hockey player for Musselburgh Grammar School prior to taking up athletics in 1979. Scotland At The Commonwealth Games
Scotland is one of only six countries to have competed in every Commonwealth Games since the first Empire Games in 1930. The others are Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand and Wales. The Commonwealth Games is the only major multi-sport event in which Scottish athletes and teams compete as Scotland; otherwise Scotland participates in multi-sport events as part of a Great Britain team. Scotland has hosted the Commonwealth Games three times, Edinburgh in 1970 and 1986, and Glasgow in 2014. The inaugural Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Edinburgh in 2000. Fraser Walker
Fraser Walker (born 1973) is a retired male Scottish swimmer specialising in the individual medley events. Swimming career Walker is best known for winning the silver medal in the Men's 200 m Individual Medley at the inaugural 1993 FINA Short Course World Championships in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, behind Germany's Christian Keller. He won a gold medal at the 1993 World Student Games in Buffalo, New York, USA and represented Scotland at the 1994 Commonwealth Games where he won the bronze medal in the 200 Metres Individual Medley. In 1993, he became the first ever British swimmer to break the two-minute barrier for the 200 m individual medley with a time of 1 minute 58.35 at the World Championships in Palma De Mallorca. This stood as the British record for four and a half years and the Scottish record for 14 years. He swam for Warrender Baths Club in Edinburgh. Robert Brand (bowls)
Robert Henry Brand, 1st Baron Brand, (30 October 1878 – 23 August 1963) was a British civil servant and businessman. Early life Brand was born on 30 October 1878. He was the fourth son of the former Susan Henrietta Cavendish and Henry Brand, 2nd Viscount Hampden, Governor of New South Wales. His three surviving brothers also gained distinction: Thomas Brand, 3rd Viscount Hampden, and the Honourable Roger Brand were both Brigadier-Generals in the Army while the Honourable Sir Hubert Brand was an Admiral in the Royal Navy. His mother was a daughter of Lord George Cavendish and his father was a son of Henry Brand, 1st Viscount Hampden, Speaker of the House of Commons. Richard Corsie
Richard Corsie MBE (born 27 November 1966) is a Scottish international outdoor and indoor bowls player, he is considered to be among the best bowls players of all time. Bowls career Corsie won the World Indoor Bowls Championships singles title three times during his career and also won the pairs title twice with Alex Marshall and Graham Robertson respectively. He won the pairs title at the 1992 World Outdoor Bowls Championship with Marshall and two years later won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in the singles at the 1994 Commonwealth Games beating his long-time nemesis and friend Tony Allcock in the final. In 1987, he won the Hong Kong International Bowls Classic singles title, in addition to winning the pairs titles in 1988. Bowls, also known as lawn bowls or lawn bowling, is a sport in which the objective is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a "jack" or "kitty".
