Scotland is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Taylor Township, Greene County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 134. History The Scotland post office was established in 1837. A majority of the early settlers were natives of the country of Scotland. The Scotland Hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. Geography Scotland is located in southern Greene County at . The southern border of the CDP follows the Martin and Daviess county lines. State Roads 45 and 58 pass just north of the community and intersect U.S. Route 231 at Interstate 69 west of the community. Washington is a city in Daviess County, Indiana. The population was 11,509 at the time of the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Daviess County. It is also the principal city of the Washington, Indiana Micropolitan Statistical Area, which comprises all of Daviess County and had an estimated 2017 population of 31,648. History Washington was platted in 1815. It was named from Washington Township. The railroad was built through Washington in 1857. Loogootee () is a city in Perry Township, Martin County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 2,751 at the time of the 2010 census. History Loogootee was established in 1853 when it was certain that a new railroad line would be extended to that point. The post office at Loogootee has been in operation since 1857. Etymology Several etymologies of the place name have been proposed. One would make it an Anglicization of the French name ''Le Gaultier''. However, the most likely explanation is that Loogootee is a compound word honoring both Thomas Lowe, engineer of the first train through the town; and Thomas Nesbe Gootee (1797–1870), owner of the land where the town was built. Bloomfield is a town within Richland Township and the county seat of Greene County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,405 at the 2010 census. Bloomfield is part of the Bloomington, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The area where Bloomfield is located has been inhabited by Native Americans since prehistory. Tribes that have lived in the area include the Miami tribe, Kickapoo, Piankeshaw and Wea. A settlement of Woodland period people has been excavated by Indiana Ball State Universities research teams near the confluence of Richland Creek and the White River south of Bloomfield. Route description From Bean Blossom and through Brown County, State Road 45 is a narrow, shoulderless two-lane road that passes between the Morgan-Monroe State Forest and the Yellowwood State Forest. As the road passes into Monroe County, the woods disappear and farms and homes begin to line the road. Martin County is a county in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 10,327. The county seat is Shoals at the center of the county, and the county's only incorporated city is Loogootee, on the county's western border. History The Indiana Territory achieved statehood near the end of 1816. Shortly thereafter, the new State legislature created Dubois (December 1817) and Daviess (February 1818) counties.
