Scope (Irish TV Series)
''SCOPE'' was a science television series produced in conjunction with Irish broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). Each show was a 25-minute, fast moving 'MTV’-style programme targeting young people. It aimed to interest young people in science and engineering and to give a wide perspective on the range of careers available in these areas. The 2007 series was the fourth in successive years and visited a wide range of locations, from Dublin to Las Vegas, Nevada. It covered topics such as ecological footprints, sleep deprivation, gravity and the science of laughter. ''SCOPE'' was an initiative of the Discover Science & Engineering (DSE) awareness programme, which is managed by Forfás on behalf of the Office of Science and Technology at the Department Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation. Science
Science is a systematic endeavor that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe. Raidió Teilifís Éireann
Raidi (; ; also written Ragdi; born August, 1938) is a Tibetan politician of the People's Republic of China. Ecological Footprint
The ecological footprint is a method promoted by the Global Footprint Network to measure human demand on natural capital, i.e. the quantity of nature it takes to support people or an economy. It tracks this demand through an ecological accounting system. The accounts contrast the biologically productive area people use for their consumption to the biologically productive area available within a region or the world (biocapacity, the productive area that can regenerate what people demand from nature). In short, it is a measure of human impact on the environment. Footprint and biocapacity can be compared at the individual, regional, national or global scale. Both footprint and biocapacity change every year with number of people, per person consumption, efficiency of production, and productivity of ecosystems. Sleep Deprivation
Sleep deprivation, also known as sleep insufficiency or sleeplessness, is the condition of not having adequate duration and/or quality of sleep to support decent alertness, performance, and health. It can be either chronic or acute and may vary widely in severity. Acute sleep deprivation is when an individual sleeps less than usual or does not sleep at all for a short period of time – usually lasting one to two days. Chronic sleep deprivation means when an individual routinely sleeps less than an optimal amount for ideal functioning. Chronic sleep deficiency is often confused with the term insomnia. Although both chronic sleep deficiency and insomnia share decreased quantity and/or quality of sleep as well as impaired function, their difference lies in the ability to fall asleep. Laughter is a pleasant physical reaction and emotion consisting usually of rhythmical, often audible contractions of the diaphragm and other parts of the respiratory system. Discover Science & Engineering (DSE) is an Irish Government initiative that aims to increase interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among students, teachers and members of the public in Ireland. Forfás () was the national policy advisory board for enterprise, trade, science, technology and innovation in Ireland. The agency was established in January 1994 under thIndustrial Development Act, 1993and was run by a board appointed by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, to whom the agency was responsible.
