Ancient Arcadia
Arcadia (; ) is a region in the central Peloponnese, Greece. It takes its name from the mythological character Arcas, and in Greek mythology it was the home of the gods Hermes and Pan (god), Pan. In European Renaissance arts, Arcadia (utopia), Arcadia was celebrated as an unspoiled, harmonious wilderness; as such, it was referenced in popular culture. The modern Arcadia (regional unit), regional unit of the same name more or less overlaps with the historical region, but is slightly larger. History Arcadia was gradually linked in a loose confederation that included all the Arcadian towns and was named Arcadian League, League of the Arcadians. Ancient Laconia
Laconia or Lakonia (, , ) is a historical and Administrative regions of Greece, administrative region of Greece located on the southeastern part of the Peloponnese peninsula. Its administrative capital is Sparti (municipality), Sparta. The word ''Laconic phrase, laconic''—to speak in a blunt, concise way—is derived from the name of this region, a reference to the ancient Spartans who were renowned for their verbal austerity and blunt, often pithy remarks. Geography Laconia is bordered by Messenia to the west and Arcadia (regional unit), Arcadia to the north and is surrounded by the Myrtoan Sea to the east and by the Laconian Gulf and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Sciritis
Sciritis or Skiritis () was a rugged and barren mountainous district in the north of ancient Laconia, between the upper Eurotas on the west and the Oenus on the east, and extending north of the highest ridge of the mountains, which were the natural boundary between Laconia and Arcadia. The name probably expressed the wild and rugged nature of the country, for the word signified hard and rugged (σκίρον, σκεῖρον, σκληρόν, Hesych). It was bounded by Maenalia on the north, and by Parrhasia on the west, and was originally part of Arcadia, but was conquered at an early period, and its inhabitants reduced to the condition of Lacedaemonian Perioeci. According to Xenophon they were subjected to Sparta even before the time of Lycurgus. They were distinguished above all the other Perioeci for their bravery; and their contingent, called the Σκιρίτης λόχος, 600 in number, usually occupied the extreme left of the Lacedaemonian wing. Mount Maenalus
Mainalo (, ; ) is the tallest mountain in the Menalon highlands of the Peloponnese, and is located in Arcadia. The mountain's highest point, known as both ''Profitis Ilias'' and ''Ostrakina'', at a height of , is the highest point in Arcadia. The mountain has a length of from southwest of Tripoli to northeast of Vytina, and a width of from Zygovisti to Kapsas. The mountain is part of a Natura 2000 site, designated in March 2011, covering an area of . In the 19th and early 20th century, the mountain was known as ''Apano Chrepa''. While the mountain takes its name from the ancient Mount Mainalos, and the ancient city of Maenalus which stood at its summit, modern scholars now identify the location of the ancient mountain as "Ágios Ilías", a mountain further south near the town of Asea.
