Swan
Swans are birds of the family (biology), family Anatidae within the genus ''Cygnus''. The swans' closest relatives include the goose, geese and ducks. Swans are grouped with the closely related geese in the subfamily Anserinae where they form the tribe (biology), tribe Cygnini. Sometimes, they are considered a distinct subfamily, Cygninae. There are six living and many extinct species of swan; in addition, there is a species known as the coscoroba swan which is no longer considered one of the true swans. Swans usually mate for life, although "divorce" sometimes occurs, particularly following nesting failure, and if a mate dies, the remaining swan will take up with another. Christian Friedrich Schwan
Christian Friedrich Schwan (12 December 1733, Prenzlau – 29 June 1815, Heidelberg) was a German publisher and bookseller. After studies of theology in Halle and Jena, he worked as a proofreader at the Academy in St. Petersburg. In 1762 he was a legal assistant in the regiment of Prince Georg von Holstein-Gottorp, later working in the Netherlands, where he published ''Anecdotes russes ou lettres d'un officier anglais''. In 1764 he started a weekly literary journal in Frankfurt am Main. In 1765 he became manager of a bookstore in Mannheim that was owned by his father-in-law. In Mannheim he established its "state theatre", and in doing so, played an active role in theatrical affairs. Schwan's bookstore and home were centers of literary life in Mannheim, where authors Lessing, Wieland, Herder, Goethe, Lenz, Schubart and Schiller were among the occasional visitors. Gesine Schwan (née ''Schneider'', 22 May 1943) is a German political science professor and member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany. The party has nominated her twice as a candidate for the federal presidential elections. On 23 May 2004, she was defeated by the Christian Democrat Horst Köhler. On 23 May 2009, Köhler beat her again to win his second term. Personal life Born in Berlin on 22 May 1943, Schwan was baptized in the Roman Catholic faith as the daughter of ''Oberschulrat'' (Senior School Inspector) Hans R. Schneider. Haley Schwan
Haley Schwan is a soloist with the Boston Ballet. Early life Haley Schwan grew up in Dearborn, Michigan where she studied gymnastics, jazz, tap, ballet, and contemporary jazz. She moved away from home at the age of 12 to train at the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C.. At 16 years old, she move to St. Petersburg, Russia to train at the Vaganova Ballet Academy. Career After completing her studies at the Vaganova Ballet Academy in 2010, Schwan joined the corps de ballet at Staatsballet Berlin (Berlin State Ballet), where she remained for five seasons. Heinrich Christian Schwan
Heinrich Christian Schwan (April 5, 1819 – May 29, 1905), a German Lutheran pastor, was the third president of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS), from 1878 to 1899. He earlier served as a missionary in Brazil, as the pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Cleveland, Ohio, and as president of the LCMS's Central District. He was responsible for the LCMS's first exposition of Martin Luther's Small Catechism, known as the "Schwan Catechism". Schwan was the son of the Rev. Georg Heinrich Christian Schwan, an Evangelical Lutheran pastor in northern Germany, and his first wife, Charlotte Wyneken. He was also the half-brother of Major General Theodore Schwan. Theodore Schwan (July 9, 1841 – May 27, 1926) was a Union Army officer during the American Civil War who received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Peebles' Farm.
