Schumacher Creek
Schumacher Creek, formerly Shumocher Creek, is a creek in Mason County in the U.S. state of Washington. It flows into Mason Lake on the traditional territory of the Squaxin Island Tribe. Schumacher Creek is part of the Sherwood Creek watershed, and contains Trask Lake and Carson Lake. Land use and ecology The Schumacher Creek watershed consists largely of industrial timberlands owned by Green Diamond Resource Company, which leases the area out to dirtbike riders and manages most of the watershed as a commercial tree farm. The headwaters of Schumacher Creek was purchased from the company by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources as a natural area preserve (NAP) in 2002. The DNR purchased 425 acres for $1,162,000. The preserve is now over 499 acres, as the DNR has purchased additional lands from a subdivision to the south. Lake Cushman
Lake Cushman is a lake and reservoir on the north fork of the Skokomish River in Mason County, Washington. The lake originally was a long narrow broadening of the Skokomish River formed in a glacial trough and dammed by a terminal moraine from the Vashon Glaciation during the most recent ice age. The lake was expanded after construction of the Cushman Dam No. 1. The lake is maintained by this dam and provides electrical power to the Tacoma Power system. As a popular retreat for hiking, fishing, boating and kayaking, Lake Cushman's shoreline is dotted with resorts and rental cabins. The Simpson Investment Company is a company based in McCleary, Washington in the US Pacific Northwest that specializes in manufacture of forest products. Founded as a logging company in 1890 by Sol Simpson, the company now functions as a holding company for the ''Simpson Door Company'', a manufacturer of wood doors. Simpson announced in 2008 that it will be entering the "green power" industry by building a new power plant at its Tacoma Tideflats mill that will generate power via the burning of sawmill and other forest waste. In August 2009, construction of the power plant was completed. It generates 55 megawatts of power which is sold to Iberdrola Renovables and used by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District.
