Gunther Schuller
Gunther Alexander Schuller (November 22, 1925June 21, 2015) was an American composer, conductor, horn player, author, historian, educator, publisher, and jazz musician. Biography and works Early years Schuller was born in Queens, New York City, the son of German parents Elsie (Bernartz) and Arthur E. Schuller, a violinist with the New York Philharmonic. He studied at the Saint Thomas Choir School and became an accomplished French horn player and flute player. At age 15, he was already playing horn professionally with the American Ballet Theatre (1943) followed by an appointment as principal hornist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (1943–45), and then the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York, where he stayed until 1959. During his youth, he attended the Precollege Division at the Manhattan School of Music, later going on to teach at the school. Robert Vernon Schuller (born July 28, 1981) is an American humanitarian, author, television producer, and a Presbyterian minister. He serves as lead pastor on the ''Hour of Power'' television program and is the senior pastor of Shepherd's Grove church in Irvine, California. He is the grandson of Robert H. Schuller. Shepherd's Grove is a church in the Presbyterian Church (USA). It is associated with the former Crystal Cathedral Ministries in Garden Grove, California. Edwin Gunther Schuller (January 11, 1955) is an American jazz bassist and composer. His father is Gunther Schuller, a composer, horn player, and music professor, and his younger brother is drummer George Schuller. Career A native of New York City, Schuller learned clarinet and guitar as a child. He switched to double bass at age 15, and the same year he had his first professional appearances with Ricky Ford. He studied at the New England Conservatory of Music. Wendy Luebbers Schuller is an American basketball coach who was, until 2021, the head coach for the Eastern Washington Eagles women's basketball team, a position she had held since 2001. Born in Redlands, California, Schuller attended and played for Fresno Pacific University as a shooting guard for the Sunbirds. Before graduating in 1992, she was selected as an NAIA Academic All-American. As coach at Eastern Washington, Schuller has advanced to the Big Sky Conference tournament 16 times. George Schuller (born December 29, 1958) is an American jazz drummer. He is the son of composer Gunther Schuller. Biography Schuller was born in New York City and raised in Boston. In 1982 he graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music with a degree in jazz performance. He performed with Herb Pomeroy, Ran Blake, George Garzone, and Jaki Byard. In 1984 he started the band Orange Then Blue. Ten years later he moved to Brooklyn and led the bands Chump Change, Schulldogs, and Jiggle.
