The Schröder Professorship of German is the senior professorship in the study of the German language at the University of Cambridge, and was founded in 1909 by a donation of £20,000 from Sir John Henry Freiherr von Schröder, Bt. of ''J. Nicholas Boyle
Nicholas Boyle FBA (born 18 June 1946) is an English literary critic. He is the emeritus Schröder Professor of German at the University of Cambridge and a fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge. He has written widely on German literature, intellectual history and religion and is known particularly for his award-winning extensive biography of Goethe (of which two of a projected three volumes have been published). Boyle became a fellow of the British Academy in 2000. Boyle's biography of Goethe currently runs to two volumes and he is writing the third. The teaching of modern languages, is taught mainly from ages seven to sixteen in primary schools and secondary schools. History The 20th Century Until the 1960s foreign language education was mostly confined to grammar and independent schools. Following the introduction of comprehensive education in the 1960s the provision of language education at secondary level, mostly French, expanded and many primary schools introduced foreign languages as part of the 'Primary School Language Project'. Dennis Howard Green (26 June 1922 Р5 December 2008) was an English philologist who was Schr̦der Professor of German at the University of Cambridge. Leonard Wilson Forster
Leonard Wilson Forster (30 March 1913 – 18 April 1997) was Professor of German at University College London, and Schröder Professor of German at the University of Cambridge. Life and work Born in London, Forster was godchild (and son) of Leonard Llewelyn Bulkeley Williams. Forster studied at Marlborough College, Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he read Modern Languages (a contemporary of Donald MacLean) and from where he obtained his BA in 1934 and MA in 1938, and the University of Basel, where he was awarded a PhD in 1938.
