Schreder RS-15
The RS-15 is a Richard Schreder-designed metal FAI 15 metre Class, Racing Class sailplane that was offered as a kit for Homebuilt aircraft, homebuilding during the 1970s and 1980s.Said, Bob: ''1983 Sailplane Directory, Soaring Magazine'', page 20. USPS 499-920 Unlike Schreder's other designs, which are all designated ''HP'' (for ''High Performance''), the RS-15 takes its nomenclature from the designer's initials and its wingspan in metres. Design and development The dominating aesthetic feature of the RS-15 is its pod-and-boom fuselage. The forward fuselage is a composite molding, and the aft portion is a 6" diameter aluminum tube. The V-tail is essentially the same as on other contemporary Schreder sailplanes, differing only in detail design from that of the Schreder HP-18, HP-18. Competition classes in gliding, as in other sports, mainly exist to ensure fairness in competition. However the classes have not been targeted at fostering technological development as in other sports. Instead classes have arisen because of: * the popularity of certain types of glider * attempts to contain the cost of access to the sport * the need to establish a stable environment for investment decisions by both manufacturers and competitors. The FAI Gliding Commission (IGC) is the sporting body overseeing air sports at the international level so that essentially the same classes and class definitions are followed in all countries. Richard Schreder
Richard E. Schreder (25 September 1915 – 2 August 2002) was an American naval aviator and sailplane developer, responsible for design and development of the HP/RS-series kit sailplanes marketed from 1962 until about 1982. Schreder also founded and ran Airmate, a successful drafting supplies company. Early life At age 9 Schreder built his first airplane, a biplane hang glider that he built from plans found in a ''Popular Mechanics'' magazine. At 19 he built his first powered airplane, a single-seater powered by a Henderson Motorcycle engine. After receiving a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toledo in 1938, Schreder joined the United States Navy as a Naval Aviation Cadet. He served in the Navy until 1948, rising to the rank of Commander. While in the Navy, Schreder was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for the sinking of the off Bermuda on 30 June 1942 while commanding a Martin PBM Mariner. Sailplane
A glider or sailplane is a type of glider aircraft used in the leisure activity and sport of gliding (also called soaring). This unpowered aircraft can use naturally occurring currents of rising air in the atmosphere to gain altitude. The HP-18 is a Richard Schreder-designed metal Racing Class sailplane that was offered as a kit for homebuilding during the 1970s and 1980s. Design and development The HP-18 is a flapped (15-meter) sailplane featuring a V-tail and 90-degree flaps for glidepath control. USPS 499-920 Design and development After the failure of the HP-15 to perform well in the 1969 US Nationals Schreder started the HP-16 with a new design philosophy. Avoiding the extremely high aspect ratio that the 15 had, he opted for a more modest 21.5:1 aspect ratio and larger wing area to improve performance in weak conditions. The HP-16's wing has 50% more wing area than the HP-15 and uses a Wortmann 67-150 airfoil. Like other Schreder designs the HP-16 is of all-metal construction, but with the wing skins bonded to foam ribs rather than using rivets to provide a smoother surface.
