School Of Posillipo
The School of Posillipo refers to a loose group of landscape painters, based in the waterfront Posillipo neighborhood of Naples, Italy. While some among them became academicians, it was not a formal school or association. In the 18th century, landscape painting or vedute had emerged as a profitable, and respectable, style of painting. Landscapes were, in part, higher in demand than depictions of Catholic religious imagery to buyers from Protestant Europe during the Age of the Enlightenment. This included the mainly aristocratic travellers on a grand tour of Southern Europe. Items in demand by travellers were paintings evoking memories of the place, playing the role that photographic postcards now fill. Pietro Fabris, for example, had created views of Pompeii and the Volcanic fields surrounding Vesuvius and Etna. Posillipo
Posillipo (; nap, Pusilleco ) is an affluent residential quarter of Naples, southern Italy, located along the northern coast of the Gulf of Naples. From the 1st century BC the Bay of Naples witnessed the rise of villas constructed by elite Romans along the most panoramic points of the coast, who had chosen the area as a favourite vacation spot. The remains of some of these, around the imperial pleasure villa of the Roman emperors, as well as the Tunnel of Sejanus can be seen today in the ''Parco archeologico del Pausilypon'', or Pausilypon Archaeological Park, and elsewhere. Giacinto Gigante
Giacinto Gigante (1806–1876) was an Italian painter, engraver, and teacher. He was known for his landscape and vista paintings, exemplary works of the Neapolitan School of Posillipo. Biography Early life Giacinto Gigante was born on July 11, 1806, in Posillipo, Naples. He was the first son of Gaetano Gigante and Anna Maria Fatati. Encouraged by his father, who was also a painter, Gigante began his artistic education in 1818 and began producing landscapes and portraits. Among his early works is ''Vecchio pescatore seduto'' which, next to the signature, is inscribed: "This sailor was the first figure that I made from life, in 1818." Barbizon School
The Barbizon school of painters were part of an art movement towards Realism in art, which arose in the context of the dominant Romantic Movement of the time. The Barbizon school was active roughly from 1830 through 1870. It takes its name from the village of Barbizon, France, on the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau, where many of the artists gathered. Most of their works were landscape painting, but several of them also painted landscapes with farmworkers, and genre scenes of village life. Some of the most prominent features of this school are its tonal qualities, color, loose brushwork, and softness of form. Filippo Palizzi
Filippo Palizzi (1818 – 1899) was an Italian painter. Biography Filippo Palizzi was born in Vasto (Chieti). He moved to Naples in 1837 and enrolled at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts, but withdrew after a few months to attend the private school of the painter Giuseppe Bonolis. Contact with his brother Giuseppe, who moved to France in 1844, introduced him to the painting of the Barbizon School. He visited Paris on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition in 1855 and then went on to the Netherlands. Having returned to Paris in 1863, he concentrated on nature studies from life and took part in the Universal Exhibition of 1867, winning a gold medal. Sylvester Feodosiyevich Shchedrin (russian: Сильвестр Феодосиевич Щедрин; 13 February 17918 November 1830) was a Russian landscape painter. Guglielmo Ciardi
Guglielmo Ciardi (13 September 1842 – 5 October 1917) was an Italian painter. Biography He was born in Venice, the son of an official of the Austrian government. Ciardi enrolled in 1861 at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied perspective with Federico Moja and landscape and seascape with Domenico Bresolin, taking over the latter’s teaching post in 1894. School Of Resina
The School of Resina was a loosely linked group of Italian artists painting both landscapes and contemporary scenes in a non-academic Realistic style. The artists, mainly painters, gathered at the seaside hamlet of Resina (now incorporated into the towns of Herculaneum and Portici), just south of Naples. The group nucleated around Giuseppe De Nittis, who after being expelled from the Naples Academy of Fine Arts, move away from the city with the express hope of painting real life outdoors, and not in a studio. Macchiaioli
The Macchiaioli () were a group of Italian painters active in Tuscany in the second half of the nineteenth century. They strayed from antiquated conventions taught by the Italian art academies, and did much of their painting outdoors in order to capture natural light, shade, and colour. Salvatore Fergola (Naples, 24 April 1799 - Naples, 7 March 1874) was an Italian painter, mainly of landscapes or vedute in and around his native Naples. He is considered an exponent of the School of Posillipo. Biography He was born in Naples. He was the son of the engraver of landscapes, Luigi Fergola and his wife, Teresa Conti. Consalvo Carelli (29 March 1818 in Naples – 2 December 1900 in Naples, Italy) was an Italian landscape painter and painter of the School of Posillipo. He is also known as Gonsalvo Carelli. Achille Vianelli or Vianelly (21 December 1803 – 2 April 1894) was an Italian painter of landscapes with genre scenes, often in watercolor. ''Piazza San Gaetano and San Lorenzo Maggiore in Naples'', c. 1845 He was born in Porto Maurizio; he moved as a child to Otranto, where his father was consul for the French government.
