School (Supertramp Song)
"School" is a song co-written by Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson of British rock band Supertramp, and included in the band's third and breakthrough 1974 album, ''Crime of the Century'', of which it was the opening track. It was later released as a single in 1983, backed with "Oh Darling", a track from their 1979 album ''Breakfast in America'', and charted at number 27 in Netherlands in 1989. In 2020, the song peaked at number 1 as its highest radio airplay chart in Spain. Writing and recording Hodgson stated that "'School was one of the songs that Rick aviesand I collaborated on. It was my song basically but Rick helped me with a lot of the lyrics. The piano solo was his, and it worked really well." Music and lyrics The song starts with a long, slow harmonica intro. Supertramp
Supertramp were an English rock band that formed in London in 1969. Marked by the individual songwriting of founders Roger Hodgson (vocals, keyboards, and guitars) and Rick Davies (vocals and keyboards), they are distinguished for blending progressive rock and pop styles as well as for a sound that relied heavily on Wurlitzer electric piano. The group's lineup changed numerous times throughout their career, with Davies being the only consistent member throughout the decades. Other longtime members included bassist Dougie Thomson, drummer Bob Siebenberg, and saxophonist John Helliwell. Hammond Organ
The Hammond organ is an electric organ invented by Laurens Hammond and John M. Hanert and first manufactured in 1935. Multiple models have been produced, most of which use sliding drawbars to vary sounds. Until 1975, Hammond organs generated sound by creating an electric current from rotating a metal tonewheel near an electromagnetic pickup, and then strengthening the signal with an amplifier to drive a speaker cabinet. The organ is commonly used with the Leslie speaker. Around two million Hammond organs have been manufactured. The organ was originally marketed by the Hammond Organ Company to churches as a lower-cost alternative to the wind-driven pipe organ, or instead of a piano. Wurlitzer Electronic Piano
The Wurlitzer electronic piano is an electric piano manufactured and marketed by Wurlitzer from the mid-1950s to mid-1980s. Sound is generated by striking a metal reed with a hammer, which induces an electric current in a pickup. It is conceptually similar to the Rhodes piano, though the sound is different. The instrument was invented by Benjamin Miessner, who had worked on various types of electric pianos since the early 1930s. The first Wurlitzer was manufactured in 1954, and production continued until 1983. Originally, the piano was designed to be used in the classroom, and several dedicated teacher and student instruments were manufactured. The Moog synthesizer is a modular synthesizer developed by the American engineer Robert Moog. Moog debuted it in 1964, and Moog's company R. A. Moog Co. A twelve-string guitar (or 12-string guitar) is a steel-string guitar with 12 strings in six courses, which produces a thicker, more ringing tone than a standard six-string guitar. Typically, the strings of the lower four courses are tuned in octaves, with those of the upper two courses tuned in unison. The gap between the strings within each dual-string course is narrow, and the strings of each course are fretted and plucked as a single unit. The neck is wider, to accommodate the extra strings, and is similar to the width of a classical guitar neck. The sound, particularly on acoustic instruments, is fuller and more harmonically resonant than six-string instruments. Electric Guitar
An electric guitar is a guitar that requires external amplification in order to be heard at typical performance volumes, unlike a standard acoustic guitar (however combinations of the two - a semi-acoustic guitar and an electric acoustic guitar exist). ''Retrospectacle – The Supertramp Anthology'' is the first comprehensive compilation album by the English rock band Supertramp, released in October 2005. Overview As Supertramp's first career retrospective, ''Retrospectacle'' contains a compilation of the most popular songs, live tracks and favourite album tracks from all of their albums from ''Supertramp'' to ''Slow Motion'', including the live albums ''Paris'' and ''It Was the Best of Times''. ''It Was the Best of Times'' is the third live album by the English rock band Supertramp, released in April 1999. The album title makes use of the opening line from ''A Tale of Two Cities'' by Charles Dickens. Overview ''It Was the Best of Times'' was recorded in September 1997 at the Royal Albert Hall, London, England, UK during the "It's About Time" tour (set up in support of the '' Some Things Never Change'' studio album). The band includes vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Mark Hart performing songs originally sung by Roger Hodgson. ''The Very Best of Supertramp'' is a greatest hits album by the English rock band Supertramp, originally released by A&M Records in June 1990. Overview The compilation is basically a new version of the '' Autobiography/Classics Vol. 9 CD'' with the additional song "School" inserted as track 1. Furthermore, all songs are featured in their full-length album versions. The cover depicts the grate from the cover of ''Crime of the Century'', the hand carrying the glass from the cover of ''Breakfast in America'' and the orange umbrella from ''Crisis? What Crisis?''. Tracks from their self-titled album ''Supertramp'' and ''Indelibly Stamped'' were not included. Reception In their retrospective review, AllMusic noted that effectively compiling Supertramp's work is impossible since the group is so album-oriented.
