Scholes Library
Scholes Library is a special academic library located at Alfred University that serves the New York State College of Ceramics, Inamori School of Engineering, as well as for the greater international arts and sciences research community. The library has an extensive collection of materials on ceramic art, science, engineering and technology, as well as extensive holdings in photography, sculpture, art history, glass art, electronic media and other areas of art and design. A Special Collections room houses original theses, rare books and artists' books. Other facilities include a 24-hour study room; an extensive slide library; audiovisual and computer data projection facilities for individual or group use; and original documents and photographs in the archives. Alfred University
Alfred University is a private university in Alfred (village), New York, Alfred, New York. It has a total undergraduate population of approximately 1,600 students. The university hosts the New York State College of Ceramics, which includes The Inamori School of Engineering and the School of Art and Design. History Alfred University was founded as a non-sectarian select school by Seventh Day Baptists. In 1836, Bethuel C. Church, a Seventh Day Baptist, was asked to organize a college in Alfred, New York, Alfred and began teaching, receiving financial assistance from the Seventh Day Baptist Educational Society with resources, in part, from "Female Educational Societies" of local churches. Unusual for the time, the school was co-educational, and within its first 20 years, it also enrolled its first African-American and Native American students. The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University (NYSCC) is a statutory college of the State University of New York located on the campus of Alfred University, Alfred, New York. There are a total of 616 students, including 536 undergraduates and 80 graduates. History The college was founded by an Act, signed into law on April 11, 1900 by Governor Theodore Roosevelt, per Chapter 383 of the Session Laws of New York, 1900 establishing the New York State School of Clay-Working and Ceramics. This move by Alfred University to petition the New York State legislature in 1899 followed a period of crisis at the University starting in 1895, which was facing low enrollments, mounting deficits, and the recent resignation of then President A.E.
