Abba Hushi
Abba Hushi (Also: Aba Khoushy; he, אבא חושי; born Abba Schneller; 1898 – 24 March 1969) was an Israeli politician who served as mayor of Haifa for eighteen years between 1951 and 1969. Hushi was one of the founders and activists of Hashomer Hatzair movement in Poland. In July 1920, he immigrated to then British Mandate of Palestine (now Israel) with a group of 130 Jewish pioneers. There he took the Hebrew surname "Hushi" speedy" a translation of his original name, Schneller. He built roads and drained swamps, and helped to found kibbutz Beit Alfa. He was one of the founding members of the Histadrut labor federation. In 1927, he settled in Haifa and joined the Ahdut HaAvoda party, which later merged with Mapai. He was secretary of the Haifa Workers Council from 1931 to 1951. Hushi was elected to Israel's first Knesset in 1949 as a member of Mapai. Ernst Schneller
Ernst Schneller (8 November 1890 – 11 October 1944) was a German school teacher. In 1914 he volunteered to join the army when war broke out. Sent to fight on the Eastern Front, he became politicised and radicalised, especially as the ideas behind the Russian Revolution filtered through to the German troops. After the war he joined first the Social Democratic Party and then, in 1920, the recently launched Communist Party of Germany. He served as a regional member (''"Landtagsabgeordneter"'') of parliament in the Saxon parliament (''"Landtag"'') between 1921 and 1924, and then between 1924 and 1933 as a member (''"Reichstagsabgeordneter"'') of the national parliament (''"Reichstag"''). He was arrested in 1933 and imprisoned. Transfer to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp followed in 1939. John Benjamin Schneller (November 1, 1911 – November 6, 1978) was a National Football League (NFL) player for the Portsmouth Spartans/Detroit Lions from 1933 to 1936, playing end on offense and defense. Early life Schneller was born on November 1, 1911, in Neenah, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin on a basketball scholarship, but upon arriving on campus was recruited to play football. He then played as a fullback and end, earning All-American Honorable Mention in his junior year. Football career Schneller joined the Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans in 1933, their last season in the fledgling NFL. The team was then purchased and moved to Detroit, where he played from 1934 to 1936. Lajos Reményi-Schneller (15 March 1892 – 24 August 1946) was a Hungarian politician, who served as Minister of Finance between 1938 and 1945. He started his career in 1923 as the director of the Hungarian Exchange Bank. He became representative in 1935. Kálmán Darányi appointed him Minister of Finance, Reményi-Schneller held this position until the end of the Second World War. His assignment was Minister of Economic from the Pál Teleki cabinet until the Miklós Kállay administration. Oliver Martin Schneller (born 26 March 1966 in Cologne) is a German composer and saxophonist. Life Schneller grew up in Ireland, Sudan, Belgium and the Philippines. After completing a MA in musicology, political science and history at the University of Bonn, he worked for the Goethe Institute in Kathmandu, Nepal (1990–91). In 1994 he moved to the US, first studying composition at the New England Conservatory in Boston. From 2000–01 he lived in Paris attending a yearlong course at IRCAM/Centre Pompidou. Otniel Schneller ( he, עתניאל שנלר, born 28 January 1952) is an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Kadima between 2006 and 2013. Biography Born in Jerusalem, and raised in Michigan, Schneller took Jewish studies and social science at Bar-Ilan University, finishing his studies in 1978.
