Schmitt, Germany
Schmitt is an ''Ortsgemeinde'' – a municipality belonging to a ''Verbandsgemeinde'', a kind of collective municipality – in the Cochem-Zell district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It belongs to the ''Verbandsgemeinde'' of Ulmen, whose seat is in the like-named town. Geography The municipality lies in the southern Eifel, roughly 1.5 km southwest of Alflen and 8 km northwest of the river Moselle at Bremm. History The placename Schmitt comes from the German word ''Schmied'', which means the same as – and is cognate with – the English word “smith”. Before the mid 18th century, the southern Eifel was an iron ore production centre of Europe-wide importance. The rivers and streams were harnessed to work the smiths’ bellows, and the forests afforded the needed firewood. Beginning in 1794, Schmitt lay under French rule. In 1815 it was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna. Since 1946, it has been part of the then newly founded state o ...

Schmitt Gillenwater Kelly Syndrome
Schmitt Gillenwater Kelly syndrome is a rare Autosome, autosomal Dominance (genetics), dominant congenital disorder consisting of radial hypoplasia, phalanges, triphalangeal thumbs, hypospadias, and jaw, maxillary teeth, diastema. Discovery It was first identified by Edward Schmitt, Jay Y. Gillenwater, Thadeus E. Kelly, and John M. Opitz in 1962, where they published their results in a case study. The family was found to be minimally restricted in normal functions, and lived relatively normal lives. The symptoms were consistent throughout all the members of the family, with the exception of all three of the boys having hypospadias. Radial Hypoplasia Signs and Symptoms The family had Radial dysplasia, hypoplastic radii, which resulted in approximately 50% shorter Radius (bone), radii. Because of this, the ulna was bowed outwards with outermost part of the ulna being pushed towards the skin. This resulted in a shorter reach. Causes Although more research is needed, the gene ...

Schmitt Trigger
In electronics, a Schmitt trigger is a comparator circuit with hysteresis implemented by applying positive feedback to the noninverting input of a comparator or differential amplifier. It is an active circuit which converts an analog input signal to a digital output signal. The circuit is named a ''trigger'' because the output retains its value until the input changes sufficiently to trigger a change. In the non-inverting configuration, when the input is higher than a chosen threshold, the output is high. When the input is below a different (lower) chosen threshold the output is low, and when the input is between the two levels the output retains its value. This dual threshold action is called ''hysteresis'' and implies that the Schmitt trigger possesses memory and can act as a bistable multivibrator (latch or flip-flop). There is a close relation between the two kinds of circuits: a Schmitt trigger can be converted into a latch and a latch can be converted into a Schmitt tri ...
