Philippe-Charles Schmerling
Philippe-Charles or Philip Carel Schmerling (2 March 1791 Delft – 7 November 1836, Liège) was a Dutch/Belgian prehistorian, pioneer in paleontology, and geologist. He is often considered the founder of paleontology. In 1829 he discovered the first Neanderthal fossil in a cave in Engis, the partial cranium of a small child, although it was not recognized as such until 1936, and is now thought to be between 30,000-70,000 years old. It was the second discovery of a fossil of the genus Homo after the discovery of the Red Lady of Paviland in Wales in 1823. Life Philipus Carel, later Philippe-Charles, Schmerling was the son of Dutch parents, Jan Carel, a trader from 's-Hertogenbosch, North Brabant, and Lucia van Koijck from Dordrecht. Anton Von Schmerling
Anton Ritter von Schmerling (23 August 180523 May 1893) was an Austrian statesman. Life Von Schmerling was born in Vienna, where his father held a high position on the judicial side of the civil service. After studying law at Vienna, in 1829 Schmerling entered the public service, and during the next eighteen years was constantly occupied, chiefly in Lower Austria. In 1847, as a member of the lesser nobility, he entered the Estates of Lower Austria and took an active part in the Liberal movement for administrative and constitutional reform of which they were the center. On the outbreak of the revolution in Vienna in March 1848, when the mob broke into the Assembly, Schmerling was one of the deputation which carried to the palace the demands of the people, and during the next few days he was much occupied in organizing the newly formed National Guard. Rene Oskarovna Schmerling ( ka, რენე შმერლინგი; December 5, 1901 — February 18, 1967) was a Georgian art historian and art critic famous for her work on medieval and Byzantine Georgian art. Biography Born in Tbilisi, Georgia in 1901, Schmerling was the daughter of painter and graphic artist . She graduated from Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 1929. Schmerling worked at the State Museum of Georgia. In 1941, she was one of the founders of the Institute of History of Georgian Art (today the Giorgi Chubinashvili National Centre for the Study of Georgian Art History and Monument Protection) at the Georgian National Academy of Sciences. She was a senior researcher there until her death in 1967. Her work concerned Georgian paleography, architecture, ironworking, illuminated manuscripts, and other medieval and Byzantine arts. Anna Pessiak-Schmerling
Anna Pessiak-Schmerling (1834 – 14 March 1896) was an Austrian composer born in Vienna. Life and career She was born Anna Schmerling, daughter of Maria Anna Giannatasio del Río (1792-1868), and the granddaughter of Cajetan Giannatasio del Río (1764-1828) who had a boarding school in Vienna. She studied with Mathilde Marchesi (1821-1913), and afterward worked as a professor of voice at the Vienna Conservatory.
