The sub-duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg emerged as a collateral line of the House Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg. The region of Nordborg (also: ''Norburg'' or ''Nordburg'') is on the island of Als. Historic overview Around 1580 the younger brother of the Danish king, John acquired the island. When he died in 1622, the land was divided amongst his sons; like their father they were so-called ''Abgeteilte Herren'' whose status was not related to their dominion. Thus the northern part of Alsen initially went to John Adolf, whereupon he became the first Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg. After his early death the region passed to his brother, Frederick. In the Second Northern War the land was devastated and the castle razed. In 1669 the state went bankrupt and the Danish king took it over. Frederick of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg (26 November 1581, in Sønderborg – 22 July 1658, in Nordborg) was Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg. Life Frederick was the youngest son of John, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg and his first wife, Elisabeth of Brunswick-Grubenhagen. Since Frederick was the youngest son, no duchy was originally provided for him. However, after the death of his brother John Adolph in 1624, he inherited his brother's title and duchy. John Adolph of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg (german: Johann Adolf or ; 15 September 1576 – 21 February 1624), was a Duke of Norburg at Als. He was the son of John II of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg and his wife Elizabeth of Brunswick-Grubenhagen. When his father died in 1622, he inherited the area around the Norburg on the island of Als and thus became the first Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg. He went to Rome to study from 1596 to 1597, like his father had done. He was engaged to Maria Hedwig, a daughter of Duke Ernest Louis of Pomerania-Wolgast. However, she died in 1606, before a marriage could take place. He remained unmarried. John Adolph died in 1624. The Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön (german: Herzogtum Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön), also ''Schleswig-Holstein-Plön'', ''Holstein-Plön'' or just ''Duchy of Plön'', was a small sub-duchy (''Teilherzogtum'') created by the physical division of the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg. Today, its remaining significance is primarily the building of Plön Castle. The Duchy of Plön was not a territorial dukedom in its own right, but a sub-division within the state structure of the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg
Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg was the name of a branch line of the House of Oldenburg as well as the name of their land. It existed from 1564 until 1668 and was a titular duchy under the King of Denmark, rather than a true territorial dukedom in its own right. The seat of the duke was Sønderborg. Parts of the domain were located in Denmark (in the Duchy of Schleswig), mainly on the islands of Als and Ærø and around Glücksburg, whilst other lands were part of the Holy Roman Empire (in the Duchy of Holstein), including the ''Ämter'' of Plön, Ahrensbök, and Reinfeld. John the Younger or John of Denmark ( da, Hans; german: Johann; 25 March 1545 – 9 October 1622) was the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg. Biography John was born on 25 March 1545 in Haderslev in the Duchy of Schleswig as the fourth child and third son of King Christian III of Denmark and Norway and his wife, Dorothea of Saxe-Lauenburg. When Christian III died in 1559, he left three sons. Nordborg Slot
Nordborg Castle ( da, Nordborg Slot) is a small castle which lies on the southern side of Nordborg Lake (''Nordborg Sø'') in Nordborg on the island of Als in Sønderborg Municipality, Denmark. The castle premises are currently used by Nordborg Slots Efterskole as a boarding school. Nordborg Castle has also been the backdrop for a number of years for Nord-Als Musikfestival. Founding and early history According to Saxo, Nordborg Castle was founded by King Svend Grathe (c. 1125–1157) under the name Alsborg. Hence, it can be dated to around 1150. Alsborg was built while the Wends still dominated the Danish coast; its location a few kilometers inland meant that the castle could not be attacked without warning, and the local population had a better chance of taking refuge there.
