Schenectady Chiefs
The Schenectady Chiefs were a professional ice hockey team in Schenectady, New York. They were a member of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League from 1981 to 1982. They played their home games in the Center City Ice Rink. Center City was unique in the sense that the arena was situated in an indoor open area of a sparsely used office building, had no PA system and had bleachers on only one side of the ice. Prior History The Chiefs were initially a member of the newly organized Intercontinental Major Hockey League (IMHL), a league founded by Lou Bodnar, a local mutual funds broker, and Bob Critelli, a local businessman. The IMHL was to consist of five teams, but with the unnamed Pittsfield team unready to field a team, this forced Bodnar and Critelli to suspend operations of the league. Schenectady, New York
Schenectady () is a city in Schenectady County, New York, United States, of which it is the county seat. As of the 2020 census, the city's population of 67,047 made it the state's ninth-largest city by population. The city is in eastern New York, near the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson rivers. It is in the same metropolitan area as the state capital, Albany, which is about southeast. Schenectady was founded on the south side of the Mohawk River by Dutch colonists in the 17th century, many of whom came from the Albany area. The name "Schenectady" is derived from the Mohawk word ''skahnéhtati'', meaning "beyond the pines" and used for the area around Albany, New York. Atlantic Coast Hockey League (1981–87)
The Atlantic Coast Hockey League (ACHL) was a minor league hockey organization that operated between 1981 and 1987. The league was founded by Bill Coffey. The Bob Payne Trophy was awarded to the team who won the league playoff championship. According to a 1985 ''Montreal Gazette'' article, rookies were paid "$150 a week plus $35 for a victory" and veterans were paid "as much as $300 a week." League regulations also said that half the roster (eight out of fifteen players) must be rookie Americans. Formation The ACHL's roots can be traced back to the former Eastern Hockey League (EHL) of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Cape Cod Buccaneers
The Cape Cod Buccaneers were a professional ice hockey team based in South Yarmouth, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. They were an inaugural member of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League and were owned by future WWE CEO Vince McMahon. History McMahon owned the Cape Cod Coliseum and wanted to secure an American Hockey League franchise for the arena. When he was unable to finalize plans for the 1981–82 season, McMahon was approached by Frazier Gleason of Indianapolis who wanted to run an franchise in the new Atlantic Coast Hockey League. Gleason and McMahon worked together during the early stages of building the team; however, McMahon assumed full control over the franchise after it became evident that Gleason did not have sufficient funds to run the team. Salem Raiders
The Salem Raiders were a professional hockey team that played in the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) and Atlantic Coast Hockey League (ACHL). They were originally the Utica Mohawks from 1978 to 1980 then became the Salem Raiders for the 1980–81 season before transferring to the Atlantic Coast Hockey League during the 1981–82 season. The Salem Raiders were coached by former Colorado Rockies coach Patrick Kelly, who led the Raiders to a league-best regular season record of 32–15–0. Salem defeated the Winston-Salem Thunderbirds in the first round of the playoffs, but eventually lost to the Mohawk Valley Stars in the Payne Trophy Finals. The Raiders were led by 1981–82 ACHL MVP Dave MacQueen, who had 43 goals and 73 points in 36 games, and Tom Mullen, who led the team with 35 assists.
