Scharoun Ensemble
The Scharoun Ensemble is a German chamber music group, consisting of members of the Berliner Philharmoniker. The repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary music. Background and history The Scharoun Ensemble Berlin was founded in 1983 by members of the Berliner Philharmoniker. The group made its public debut with Schubert's Octet in F major D. 803. The ensemble is named after architect Hans Scharoun, designer of the Berliner Philharmonie. The permanent core of the ensemble is a standard octet comprising clarinet, horn, bassoon, two violins, viola, cello and double bass. Since 2005, the annually Zermatt Festival is organized by and around the Scharoun Ensemble. Chamber Music
Chamber music is a form of classical music that is composed for a small group of instruments—traditionally a group that could fit in a palace chamber or a large room. Most broadly, it includes any art music that is performed by a small number of performers, with one performer to a part (in contrast to orchestral music, in which each string part is played by a number of performers). However, by convention, it usually does not include solo instrument performances. Because of its intimate nature, chamber music has been described as "the music of friends". For more than 100 years, chamber music was played primarily by amateur musicians in their homes, and even today, when chamber music performance has migrated from the home to the concert hall, many musicians, amateur and professional, still play chamber music for their own pleasure. Stefan De Leval Jezierski
Stefan de Leval Jezierski (born March 22, 1954) is an American horn player and was the longest serving hornist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (Berliner Philharmoniker). Born in Boston, he studied horn with Myron Bloom at the Cleveland Institute of Music and at the North Carolina School of the Arts. While still a student he appeared as a soloist with members of the Cleveland Orchestra in Severance Hall and was shortly thereafter appointed principal horn of the Kassel State Opera orchestra. In 1978 at the age of twenty-three, he was hired by Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic to play high horn. Until 2021 he was a member of the winds of the Berlin Philharmonic and co-founded the Scharoun Ensemble. Daniel Harding
Daniel John Harding (born 31 August 1975) is a British conductor. Biography Harding was born in Oxford. He studied trumpet at Chetham's School of Music and was a member of the National Youth Orchestra at age 13. At age 17, Harding assembled a group of musicians to perform ''Pierrot Lunaire'' of Arnold Schoenberg, and sent a tape of the performance to Simon Rattle in Birmingham. After listening to this tape, Rattle hired Harding as his assistant at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for a year, from 1993 to 1994. Harding then attended the University of Cambridge, but after his first year at university, Claudio Abbado named him his assistant with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Harding first conducted the Berlin Philharmonic at age 21. At the time of his first conducting appearance at The Proms in 1996, he was then the youngest-ever conductor to appear there. Hans Werner Henze
Hans Werner Henze (1 July 1926 – 27 October 2012) was a German composer. His large oeuvre of works is extremely varied in style, having been influenced by serialism, atonality, Stravinsky, Italian music, Arabic music and jazz, as well as traditional schools of German composition. In particular, his stage works reflect "his consistent cultivation of music for the theatre throughout his life". Henze was also known for his political convictions. He left Germany for Italy in 1953 because of a perceived intolerance towards his leftist politics and homosexuality. Late in life he lived in the village of Marino in the central Italian region of Lazio, and in his final years still travelled extensively, in particular to Britain and Germany, as part of his work. An avowed Marxist and member of the Italian Communist Party, Henze produced compositions honoring Ho Chi Minh and Che Guevara. The RIAS Kammerchor (RIAS Chamber Choir) is a German choir based in Berlin, Germany. It receives support from the Rundfunk Orchester und Chöre GmbH Berlin ("Berlin Radio Orchestra and Choirs"), a limited-liability company owned by the public broadcasters Deutschlandradio (40%) and RBB (5%), the German Federal Republic (35%), and the State of Berlin (20%). History Founded in 1948, the choir was originally known as the ''Rundfunkchor des RIAS'', after the US-run German-language radio station Rundfunk im amerikanischen Sektor ("Broadcasting in the American Sector"), or RIAS. Frank Martin (15 September 1890 – 21 November 1974) was a Swiss composer, who spent much of his life in the Netherlands. Childhood and youth Born into a Huguenot family in the Eaux-Vives quarter of Geneva, the youngest of the ten children of a Calvinist pastor named Charles Martin, Frank Martin started to improvise on the piano prior to his formal schooling. At the age of nine he had already written a few songs without external musical instruction. At 12, he attended a performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's '' St. Matthew Passion'' and was deeply affected by it. Karl-Heinz Steffens
Karl-Heinz Steffens (born 28 November 1961) is a German clarinetist and conductor. For the first part of his musical career, Steffens was a solo clarinetist, and also served as principal clarinet with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. From 2009 to 2018, Steffens was music director of the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz in Ludwigshafen. During his tenure, the orchestra received such honours as the ECHO award for Best Orchestra in 2015 for their recording of works by Bernd Alois Zimmermann. Steffens was music director of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet from 2016 to 2018. Alexander Bader
Alexander Bader (born 1965 in Stuttgart) is a German clarinetist. He studied piano and clarinet at Berlin's Hochschule der Künste. His clarinet teachers were Manfred Preis and Peter Rieckhoff. He studied under Wolfgang Meyer in the Karlsruhe’s Staatliche Hochschule für Musik. He became a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2006, after playing in Komische Oper as principal clarinet, as well as the Bavarian State Opera and the Munich Philharmonic.
