Von Schantz Family
von Schantz is a noble family in the Swedish House of Nobility, Swedish and Finnish House of Nobility, Finnish Houses of Nobility. They are listed as Family Number 1255 by the Swedish House of Nobility, and as Number 95 by the Finnish House of Nobility. The family was knighted in Sweden in 1693 and was immatriculated in to the Finnish nobility in 1818. Members Johan Eberhard Schantz (1614-1665) who was descended from Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Germany, moved to Sweden in the 1630s, becoming secretary to Charles X Gustav of Sweden, King Charles X Gustav. Four of his sons by his second marriage in 1662 with Elisabeth Pfeiff (May 21, 1643 - February 10, 1729) were also in the king's service as secretary and similar positions, and all were knighted. Johan Eberhard Von Schantz
Johan Eberhard von Schantz (russian: Иван Иванович фон Шанц; 29 October 1802 – 3 January 1880) was a Finnish-born admiral in the Russian Imperial Navy, ship designer and explorer. Life Schantz was born in the Western Finnish coastal town of Pori, which at the time was a part of Sweden, the son of the lieutenant general Johan Eberhard von Schantz and Johanna Sofia Didron. In 1814 he enlisted the Russian merchant navy and later took chief mate classes in Vyborg. Schantz served 1821–1828 as a midshipman in the 26th naval equipage of the Baltic Fleet, 1828–1830 as a lieutenant in the 8th naval equipage, 1830–1832 in the 27th naval equipage and 1832 in the 5th naval equipage. During the Russo-Turkish War (1828–29), Schantz served in the ship of the line ''Fère Champenoise'' which took part of the blockade of the Dardanelles. The Imperial Russian Navy () operated as the navy of the Russian Tsardom and later the Russian Empire from 1696 to 1917. Formally established in 1696, it lasted until dissolved in the wake of the February Revolution of 1917. It developed from a smaller force that had existed prior to Tsar Peter the Great's founding of the modern Russian navy during the Second Azov campaign in 1696. It expanded in the second half of the 18th century and reached its peak strength by the early part of the 19th century, behind only the British and French fleets in terms of size. Schantz Islands
Wotho Atoll ( Marshallese: , ) is a coral atoll of 13 islands in the Pacific Ocean, and forms a legislative district of the Ralik Chain of the Marshall Islands. Its total land area is only , but it encloses a lagoon of . The name "Wotho" means either "entrance through the reef", or "island far away" according to different sources. The population of Wotho Atoll was 97 in 2011. History First recorded sighting of Wotho Atoll by Europeans was by the Spanish expedition of Miguel López de Legazpi on 12 January 1565. They were charted as ''Las Hermanas'' (The Sisters in Spanish). It is likely that it had been visited earlier, in between December 1542 and January 1543, by the Spanish expedition of Ruy López de Villalobos. Coral Reef
A coral reef is an underwater ecosystem characterized by reef-building corals. Reefs are formed of colonies of coral polyps held together by calcium carbonate. Most coral reefs are built from stony corals, whose polyps cluster in groups. Coral belongs to the class Anthozoa in the animal phylum Cnidaria, which includes sea anemones and jellyfish. Unlike sea anemones, corals secrete hard carbonate exoskeletons that support and protect the coral. Most reefs grow best in warm, shallow, clear, sunny and agitated water. Coral reefs first appeared 485 million years ago, at the dawn of the Early Ordovician, displacing the microbial and sponge reefs of the Cambrian. Peter Gösta Schantz, born on 28 April 1954 in Stockholm, Sweden, graduated as doctor in medical sciences at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm in 1986, became professor in human movement sciences at Mid-Sweden University in Östersund, Jämtland, in 2008, and professor in human biology, including the multidisciplinary field of movement, health and environment, at the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences, GIH, in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2013.
