Schaereria Porpidioides
''Schaereria porpidioides'' is a species of saxicolous lichen, saxicolous (rock-dwelling), crustose lichen in the family Schaereriaceae. It is found in the Falkland Islands. Taxonomy The species was species description, formally described as a new to science in 2001 by lichenologists Alan Fryday and Ralph Common. It is only known from several scientific collection, collections made by Henry Andrew Imshaug, Henry Imshaug and Richard Clinton Harris, Richard Harris in 1968. The type (biology), type collection was made from Mount Adam at an altitude between , where it was found growing on exposed siliceous rocks located in feldmark on a summit ridge. Associated lichens include ''Neuropogon fasciata'', ''Pertusaria spegazzinii'', ''Poeltidea perusta'', and ''Rhizocarpon geographicum''. ''Rimularia andreaeicola'' was later identified as another common associate. The botanical name, species epithet ''porpidioides'' alludes to the taxon's physical appearance, resembling a species from th ...

Saxicolous Lichen
A saxicolous lichen is a lichen that grows on rock. The prefix "sax" from the Latin means "rock" or "stone". Characteristics Saxicolous lichens exhibit very slow growth rates. They may develop on rock substrates for long periods of time, given the absence of external disturbances. The importance of the mineral composition of the rock substrate, as well as the elemental geochemistry Geochemistry is the science that uses the tools and principles of chemistry to explain the mechanisms behind major geological systems such as the Earth's crust and its oceans. The realm of geochemistry extends beyond the Earth, encompassing the e ... is also important to the distribution of saxicolous lichens, but the relationship between the substrate influence on lichens, either chemical or textural, is still obscure. Communities of saxicolous lichens are often species-rich in terms of number. References Lichenology {{lichen-stub ...
