Scargo Lake
Scargo Lake is a fresh water kettle pond in Dennis, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. Legends about its formation There are many Native American Legends about the formation of Scargo Lake, and all are some variant of a tale of Princess Scargo. One story is that a man from another tribe brought the princess four fish, and he promised to return before the fish died. The princess was said to have had a small pond dug to keep the fish in, but woke one morning to find that the pond had dried up, and all but one fish had died. Her tears kept the last fish alive until her father dug a lake for it. The boundary of this lake was determined by where four arrows of a tribesman landed. Once the lake was complete, the fish survived, and the man from the other tribe fulfilled his promise to return to the princess. Kettle (landform)
A kettle (also known as a kettle lake, kettle hole, or pothole) is a depression/hole in an outwash plain formed by retreating glaciers or draining floodwaters. The kettles are formed as a result of blocks of dead ice left behind by retreating glaciers, which become surrounded by sediment deposited by meltwater streams as there is increased friction. The ice becomes buried in the sediment and when the ice melts, a depression is left called a kettle hole, creating a dimpled appearance on the outwash plain. Lakes often fill these kettles; these are called kettle hole lakes. Another source is the sudden drainage of an ice-dammed lake. When the block melts, the hole it leaves behind is a kettle. As the ice melts, ramparts can form around the edge of the kettle hole. The lakes that fill these holes are seldom more than deep and eventually fill with sediment. Dennis, Massachusetts
Dennis is a town in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States, located near the center of Cape Cod. The population was 14,674 at the 2020 census. The town encompasses five distinct villages, each of which has its own post office. These constituent villages are Dennis (including North Dennis), Dennis Port, East Dennis, South Dennis, and West Dennis. History Dennis was first settled by Europeans in 1639, by John Crowe (later Crowell), Antony Thacher, and Thomas Howes, as part of the town of Yarmouth. It was known then as the East Precinct. The original inhabitants who preceded English settlers called the northern sections of town Nobscuesset, Sesuit, and Quivet. The town officially separated and incorporated in 1793. Scargo Tower
Scargo Tower is a cobblestone tower located atop Scargo Hill in Dennis, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. History There have been three Scargo towers at this spot. The first tower was built in 1874 by the Tobey family. Constructed out of wood, it was destroyed by a gale in 1876. The second tower, known as "Tobey Tower" and also made of wood, burned down in 1900. The present tower, was built of cobblestone in 1901 as a memorial to the Tobey family. The tower stands thirty feet high. It is located on the highest hill in the area. From the tower, one can see almost all of Cape Cod on the bay side, including Provincetown and the Sagamore Bridge. The Dennis Beaches, are a series of beaches in Dennis, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. There are a total of eighteen beaches; sixteen located on the ocean and two located on fresh water ponds. Eight of the ocean beaches, Mayflower, Corporation, Bayview, Howes Street, Chapin Memorial, Cold Storage and Harbor View, are located on the northern (bay side) of the Cape and Islands. Massachusetts Route 6A is the state road for two sections formerly known as U.S. Route 6 (US 6) on Cape Cod. Most of Route 6A is also known as the Old King's Highway.
