Scandinavian Open Championship
The Scandinavian Open Championship is a Group 3 flat horse race in Denmark open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run over a distance of 2,400 metres (about 1½ miles) at Klampenborg in early August. History The event was first run with its present title in 1977 & 1978 then reintroduced in 1996. It replaced the Dansk Eclipse Stakes, Denmark's version of the Eclipse Stakes. For a period the Scandinavian Open Championship held Listed status. It was promoted to Group 3 level in 2000. That year's running was the first Group race to be staged in Denmark. It is currently the country's only Group race. The 2014 and 2015 renewals took place in June. Klampenborg
Klampenborg is a northern suburb to Copenhagen, Denmark. It is located in Gentofte Municipality, directly on Øresund, between Taarbæk and Skovshoved. Like other neighbourhoods along the Øresund coast, Klampenborg is an affluent area with many large houses. Landmarks Klampenborg is known for a cluster of building projects by the Functionalist Danish architect Arne Jacobsen. These include Bellevue Beach, the Bellavista housing estate and the Bellevue Theatre, all completed between 1932–36 as some of the earliest Danish examples of Modernism. Klampenborg is the main gateway to the extensive Jægersborg Deer Park, one of the most popular green areas in greater Copenhagen, known for its large deer population, the Hermitage Royal Hunting Lodge and ancient oak trees. Lester Piggott
Lester Keith Piggott (5 November 1935 – 29 May 2022) was an English professional jockey and trainer. With 4,493 career flat racing wins in Britain, including a record nine Epsom Derby victories, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest flat racing jockeys of all time and the originator of a much imitated style. Popularly called "The Long Fellow", he was known for his competitive personality, restricting his weight and, on occasion, not sparing the whip, such as in the 1972 Derby. Piggott was convicted of tax fraud in 1987 and sentenced to three years in prison. He served just over one year. Anne Elizabeth Cowdrey, 14th Lady Herries of Terregles, Baroness Cowdrey of Tonbridge (''née'' Fitzalan-Howard; 12 June 1938 – 23 November 2014) was a British racehorse trainer and peeress. Early life and family Born Lady Anne Fitzalan-Howard on 12 June 1938, she was the eldest of four daughters of Bernard Fitzalan-Howard, 16th Duke of Norfolk and The Hon. Lavinia Strutt. She had three younger sisters: Mary (who succeeded her as 15th Lady Herries of Terregles), Sarah and Jane (presently 16th Lady Herries of Terregles). She grew up at the family seat Arundel Castle in West Sussex. She was educated at the Priory School at Arundel and the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Woldingham. Pat Eddery
Patrick James John Eddery (18 March 1952 – 10 November 2015) was an Irish flat racing jockey and trainer. He rode three winners of the Derby and was Champion Jockey on eleven occasions. He rode the winners of 4,632 British flat races, a figure exceeded only by Sir Gordon Richards. Background Eddery was born in Newbridge, County Kildare, less than 2 miles from the Curragh Racecourse, and his birth was registered in Dublin. He was the fifth child of Jimmy Eddery, a jockey who rode Panaslipper to win the Irish Derby in 1955, and Josephine (the daughter of jockey Jack Moylan). His brother, Paul, also went on to become a jockey. Kim Andersen (jockey)
Kim Andersen (born 1963 in Klampenborg, Denmark) is a jockey in Scandinavian horse racing. Andersen grew up at the racecourse in Klampenborg where his father, John Andersen, was a jockey in the 1960s. He was keen to follow in his father's footsteps after finishing his education. His apprenticeship was postponed for 3 years because his father retired due to ill health after being in the business over in 20 years. His parents thought it was best if he first got an education. After finishing school Kim Andersen trained as a confectioner before he first became an apprentice to the champion trainer Franz Nutz. At the time Nutz already had a number of apprentice jockeys in his care who helped teach Andersen the business. The first year as an apprentice there were no victories, but he persevered and won his first race a year later. Harry Thomson Jones
Harry Thomson Jones (1925 – 5 December 2007), often known as "Tom Jones", was a British racehorse trainer whose career lasted from 1951 to 1996. He was successful in National Hunt racing, training the winners of 12 Cheltenham Festival races before switching to flat racing and going on to train the winners of British Classic Races. He was educated at Eton College and was first licensed as a trainer in 1951. Amongst his notable National Hunt horses were Tingle Creek, winner of 11 races and a specialist at Sandown Park Racecourse, and Frenchman's Cove, winner of the 1962 Whitbread Gold Cup and 1964 King George VI Chase.
