Sawmills Studio
Sawmills Studios, founded in 1974 by record producer Tony Cox, is a recording studio near Golant on the banks of the River Fowey in Cornwall. The studio building is located on its own tidal creek on the banks of the Fowey. Sawmills was one of the first residential recording facilities in the UK. The main building is a former 17th-century water mill and the site has a documented history stretching back to the 11th century. The location is unusual as it can only be accessed by boat or the Saints' Way footpath that runs past the studio. It was used most notably by musicians such as The Stone Roses (" Fools Gold"), The Verve ('' A Storm in Heaven''), Muse, Oasis (''Definitely Maybe''), Catatonia, Ride, Swans and Supergrass. A sawmill (saw mill, saw-mill) or lumber mill is a facility where logging, logs are cut into lumber. Modern sawmills use a motorized saw to cut logs lengthwise to make long pieces, and crosswise to length depending on standard or custom sizes (dimensional lumber). The Portable sawmill, "portable" sawmill is of simple operation. The log lies flat on a steel bed, and the motorized saw cuts the log horizontally along the length of the bed, by the operator manually pushing the saw. The most basic kind of sawmill consists of a chainsaw and a customized jig ("Alaskan sawmill"), with similar horizontal operation. Muse are an English Rock music, rock band from Teignmouth, Teignmouth, Devon, formed in 1994. The band consists of Matt Bellamy (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), Chris Wolstenholme (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Dominic Howard (drums). Taste Media
Taste Media is a record label and production company that has released records for bands such as Muse and Shed Seven. The company was formed by Safta Jaffery (former executive of Decca and Magnet Records A&R) and Dennis Smith, who owned the Sawmills recording studio in Cornwall. History Taste Media recorded three of Muse's albums, '' Showbiz'', ''Origin of Symmetry'' and ''Absolution''. Whilst the recordings by Muse were licensed to Mushroom Records in the United Kingdom, with the label credit being split between Taste Media and Mushroom, later acts were issued independently. These independent releases included One Minute Silence's ''One Life Fits All'', Serafin's ''No Push Collide'', along with Shed Seven's '' Where Have You Been Tonight?'' live album and their "Why Can't I Be You?" single, both released in 2003. Supergrass
Supergrass are an English rock band formed in 1993 in Oxford. For the majority of the band's tenure, the line-up consisted of brothers Gaz (lead vocals, guitar) and Rob Coombes (keyboards), Mick Quinn (bass, backing vocals) and Danny Goffey (drums, backing vocals). Originally a three-piece, Rob Coombes officially joined the band in 2002. The band signed to Parlophone Records in 1994 and produced ''I Should Coco'' (1995), the best-selling debut album for the label since the Beatles' '' Please Please Me''. Their first album's fourth single, " Alright", was an international hit. Swans (band)
Swans is an American experimental rock band formed in 1982 by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira. One of the few acts to emerge from the New York City-based no wave scene and stay intact into the next decade, Swans have become recognized for an ever-changing sound, exploring genres such as noise rock, post-punk, industrial and post-rock. Initially, their music was known for its sonic brutality and misanthropic lyrics. Following the addition of singer, songwriter and keyboardist Jarboe in 1986, Swans began to incorporate melody and intricacy into their music. Jarboe remained the band's only constant member except Gira and semi-constant guitarist Norman Westberg until their dissolution in 1997. Ride (band)
Ride is an English rock band formed in Oxford in 1988. The band consists of vocalists and guitarists Andy Bell and Mark Gardener, drummer Laurence "Loz" Colbert and bassist Steve Queralt. They are recognised as one of the key pioneers of shoegaze, an alternative rock subgenre that emerged to prominence in the United Kingdom during the early 1990s. The band's first two albums, ''Nowhere'' (1990) and ''Going Blank Again'' (1992), are critically acclaimed as two of the greatest shoegaze albums of all time. The latter's lead single, " Leave Them All Behind", was the band's most commercially successful song, reaching No. 9 on the UK Singles Chart. Catatonia (band)
Catatonia were an alternative rock band from Wales who gained popularity in the mid-to-late 1990s. The band formed in 1992 after Mark Roberts met Cerys Matthews and Kirsty Kennedy. The first major lineup featured Dafydd Ieuan of Super Furry Animals on drums, Paul Jones on bass, and Clancy Pegg on keyboards. With this line-up the band recorded two EPs, '' For Tinkerbell'' and ''Hooked''. Pegg was fired prior to work on their first studio album, ''Way Beyond Blue'', and during the recording of the album the band was joined by drummer Aled Richards, replacing Ieuan, who left to focus full-time on Super Furry Animals. During the live promotional appearances for the album the band was joined by guitarist Owen Powell. This latest incarnation of the band lasted until its dissolution in 2001. ''Definitely Maybe'' is the debut studio album by English rock band Oasis, released by Creation Records on 29 August 1994. Oasis booked Monnow Valley Studio near Rockfield in late 1993 to record the album and worked with producer Dave Batchelor, whom band member Noel Gallagher knew from his days working as a roadie for the Inspiral Carpets, though sessions were unsatisfactory and Batchelor was subsequently fired. It is the only studio album to feature all five original members, as founding member drummer Tony McCarroll was sacked from the band in 1995. In January 1994, the group set about re-recording the album at Sawmills Studio in Cornwall, where sessions were produced by Noel alongside Mark Coyle. Oasis were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. ''A Storm in Heaven'' is the debut studio album by the English rock band the Verve, at the time known just as Verve, released on 21 June 1993 on the Hut label. It charted at number twenty-seven in the UK. In 2013, ''NME'' ranked it at number 473 in its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Recording ''A Storm in Heaven'' was recorded at Sawmills Studios in Cornwall over seven weeks between December 1992 and January 1993, with the producer John Leckie. Tony Cox (record Producer)
Tony Cox is a British record producer and arranger. As such he was influential in late 1960s and 1970s folk rock developments and the fledgling progressive rock scene, and has since worked primarily as a composer and orchestrator. Career He entered the music business as a performer in 1966, and as a duo with Douglas MacRae-Brown released ''The Young Idea'' LP in 1967, and had a UK top ten hit single with a cover version of the Lennon-McCartney song "With a Little Help from My Friends". (The album was re-issued on CD in 2009 with previously unreleased tracks.) He continued performing in the studio with various acts he produced such as Trees and Mick Softley. He was an early adopter of the EMS VCS 3 synthesizer and in 1971 played on the Spirogyra album ''St. Radigunds'', and Mike Heron's album ''Smiling Men With Bad Reputations''.
