Savaii Samoa
Savaii Samoa is a former Samoa rugby union representative team that played in the Pacific Rugby Cup from 2006 to 2010. The other Samoan team in the Cup was Upolu Samoa. Savaii Samoa and Upolu Samoa were selected from tournaments that took place in Samoa. Most of the players selected in these two teams were local players. The Savaii Samoa team beat Air Pacific Fiji Warriors 10-5 at Marist Ground in Apia, Samoa to win the inaugural Pacific Rugby Cup in 2006, but did not feature in the finals for the remaining four seasons. Samoa Rugby Football Union
Rugby Samoa ( sm, Lakapi Samoa) is the governing body of the sport of rugby union in Samoa. Founded as the ''Apia Rugby Union'' in 1924, it was affiliated to the New Zealand Rugby Football Union the same year.Jones, p10 It joined the International Rugby Board as the ''Western Samoa Rugby Football Union'' in 1988. In 1997, when Western Samoa amended its constitution to change the country's name from ''Western Samoa'' to ''Samoa'', the union also changed its name, and dropped the word football to become the ''Samoa Rugby Union''. In November 2020, they changed their name to ''Lakapi Samoa'' which is Samoan for ''Rugby Samoa''. They were formerly members of the Pacific Islands Rugby Alliance (PIRA) along with Fiji and Tonga. Pacific Rugby Cup
The World Rugby Pacific Challenge, formerly the IRB Pacific Rugby Cup, is an annual rugby union football tournament held in Oceania since 2006. It is contested by national 'A' teams (formed from the best locally based players, with most not already on their nations' senior rugby team) from the Asia-Pacific region. The tournament is run by World Rugby (previously IRB) through Oceania Rugby. The original IRB Pacific Rugby Cup featured two teams from each of the three Pacific Island countries of Fiji, Samoa and Tonga. The competition followed the completion of Fiji's Colonial Cup, Samoa's National Provincial Championship and Tonga's Provincial Championship and provided player development pathway leading into the IRB Pacific Nations Cup. Upolu Samoa
Upolu Samoa is a former Samoa rugby union representative team that played in the IRB Pacific Rugby Cup from 2006 to 2010. The other Samoan team in the Cup was Savaii Samoa. The players for Upolu Samoa were selected from all rugby union competitions in Samoa. History The Upolu Samoa team failed to reach the final of the Pacific Rugby Cup in its inaugural year, 2006. Samoa was instead represented by Savaii Samoa, who won the title. After an entertaining 2007 tournament, Upolu managed to reach the final for the first time and became the Pacific Rugby Cup champions, defeating Tau'uta Reds in the final played at Teufaiva Stadium in Nukualofa on 5 May 2007. Upolu Samoa hosted the final at Apia Park for the next two seasons but had to be satisfied with being runners-up on both occasions with Tautahi Gold winning 11 to 3 in 2008, and Fiji Warriors winning 19 to 7 in 2008. The 2007 Pacific Rugby Cup was the second edition of the Pacific Rugby Cup competition and featured 6 representative rugby union football teams; 2 from each of the three Pacific rugby unions – Fiji, Samoa and Tonga. It was played from 31 March to 5 May. In the grand final match, Upolu Samoa was victorious on Tongan soil, beating the Tau'uta Reds in the decider by 20 points (35 to 15).
