Philip Saumarez
Captain Philip de Saumarez (1710–1747) was a British naval officer, notable for his role as captain of '' HMS Nottingham'' in capturing the French ship ''Mars'' and as the first lieutenant of George Anson,1st Baron Anson in his voyage around the world. He designed what would eventually be the first uniforms for the Royal Navy. Early life Philip de Saumarez was born in 1710, to Matthew de Saumarez and Anne Durell, daughter of John Durell and Ann Dumaresq. Saumarez had many notable naval officers in his family. His uncle was Captain Thomas Durell who was famous for the capture of the Spanish Princesa. His nephew was an even more famous de Saumarez, Admiral James Saumarez, 1st Baron de Saumarez. HMS Nottingham (1703)
HMS ''Nottingham'' was a 60-gun fourth-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, built at Deptford Dockyard and launched on 10 June 1703. She was the first ship to bear the name. Commissioned under Captain Samuel Whitaker, she formed part of Admiral Cloudesley Shovell's fleet that sailed with Admiral Rooke to attack and take the formidable Rock of Gibraltar in 1704. The ship also saw action in the Battle of Cabrita point in March 1705 and in the Mediterranean in 1711. ''Nottingham'' was rebuilt according to the 1706 Establishment at Deptford, from where she was relaunched on 5 October 1719. On 18 May 1739, orders were issued directing that ''Nottingham'' be taken to pieces and rebuilt according to the 1733 proposals of the 1719 Establishment at Sheerness, from where she was relaunched on 17 August 1745. Admiral of the Red James Saumarez, 1st Baron de Saumarez (or Sausmarez), Order of the Bath, GCB (11 March 1757 – 9 October 1836) was an admiral of the British Royal Navy, known for his victory at the Second Battle of Algeciras. Early life Saumarez was born at St Peter Port, Guernsey to an old island family, the eldest son of Matthew de Sausmarez (1718-1778) and his second wife Carteret, daughter of James Le Marchant. He was a nephew of Captain Philip Saumarez and John de Sausmarez (1706-1774) of Sausmarez Manor. He was also the elder brother of General (United Kingdom), General Sir Thomas Saumarez (1760-1845), Equerry and Groom of the Chamber to the Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, Duke of Kent, and afterwards Commander-in-Chief of New Brunswick and of Richard Saumarez (1764-1835), a surgeon and medical author. James St Vincent Saumarez, 4th Baron de Saumarez (17 July 1843 – 25 April 1937), was a British diplomat and peer, for some forty-five years a member of the House of Lords. Saumarez (horse)
Saumarez (28 March 1987–2012) was a Thoroughbred racehorse who won France's most prestigious race, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1990. Background Saumarez was sired by the 1985 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Rainbow Quest in his first season at stud. He was owned by National Hockey League superstar Wayne Gretzky and owner of his Los Angeles Kings ice hockey team, Bruce McNall. He was trained at trained by Henry Cecil at his Warren Place stable at Newmarket, Suffolk. Racing career Saumarez failed to win at age two in 1989 then got his first win in 1990 under Steve Cauthen in the Aldborough Maiden Stakes. Following a win in the Harvester Graduation Stakes, he finished second to winner Blue Stag in the Dee Stakes at Chester Racecourse. In June he was sent to France where Nicolas Clément took over as trainer.
