The Sault Thunderbirds were a professional ice hockey team in the Eastern Professional Hockey League from 1959 to 1962. The Thunderbirds were based in Sault Ste. Ice Hockey
Ice hockey (or simply hockey) is a team sport played on ice skates, usually on an ice skating rink with lines and markings specific to the sport. It belongs to a family of sports called hockey. Pat Stapleton (ice Hockey)
Patrick James "Whitey" Stapleton (July 4, 1940 – April 8, 2020) was a Canadian ice hockey player. A defenceman, Stapleton played 15 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) and the World Hockey Association (WHA), most notably for the Chicago Black Hawks. He was the father of Mike Stapleton, who had a lengthy career in the NHL. Playing career Stapleton played Junior B hockey with the Sarnia Legionnaires before spending two seasons with the St. Catharines Teepees of the Ontario Hockey Association, winning the Memorial Cup in 1960. With the Legionnaires he won two Western Jr. 'B' championships and one Sutherland Cup as an all-Ontario champion. Although he was a defenceman, he led the Legionnaires in scoring during his second season. His first full season was with the Sault Thunderbirds of the Eastern Professional Hockey League in 1960–61. Bill Speer
Francis William Speer (March 20, 1942 – February 12, 1989) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played in the National Hockey League and World Hockey Association between 1967 and 1974. He won the Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins in 1970. Career Speer played 135 games in the World Hockey Association and 130 games in the National Hockey League. Born in Lindsay, Ontario, he played for the Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Raiders, New York Golden Blades, and Jersey Knights. Speer was known as a solid, shot-blocking defenseman throughout his career. Speer was known for his weight issues during his hockey career. Although generally listed as 5' 11" and 200 pounds throughout his career, his regularly played closer to 210 pounds and even weighed as much as 242 pounds during the 1966-67 offseason. Clifford Harvey Schmautz (March 17, 1939 – February 11, 2002) was a Canadian professional ice hockey right wing. The majority of his career, which lasted from 1959 to 1975, was spent in the Western Hockey League with the Portland Buckaroos, where he played together with his brother Arnie Schmautz and scored forty goals three times and led the league in scoring in the 1965– 1965–66 season. He also played 56 games in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres and Philadelphia Flyers during the 1970–71 season.
