Sault Ste. Marie Area Public Schools, also known as Sault Area Public Schools, is a public school district headquartered in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. In addition to Sault Ste. Marie, the district includes Soo Township, Sugar Island Township, most of Bruce Township, Chippewa County, Michigan, Bruce Township, and portions of Dafter Township. History Tim Hall became superintendent circa 2011. In 2021 he retired. In 2021 all members of the board of education voted to make Amy Scott-Kronemeyer the superintendent. Soo Township
Soo Township is a civil township of Chippewa County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,141 at the 2010 census. Communities * Neebish Island is separated from the township by waters of St. Marys River. Its hundred-odd permanent residents comprise an unincorporated community. Geography Soo Township consists of two section in northeastern Chippewa County, connected by a stretch of the St. Marys River. The northwestern section is part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and is bordered to the north by the city of Sault Ste. Marie. It extends west into Izaak Walton Bay on the St. Marys River (upstream from Sault Ste. Marie) and east as far as the Little Rapids Channel of the river (downstream from Sault Ste. Marie). The southeastern portion of the township, about 43% of the township's total territory, comprises Neebish Island, downriver from the rest of the township. Sugar Island Township
Sugar Island Township is a civil township of Chippewa County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 652 at the 2010 census. The township consists entirely of Sugar Island in the St. Marys River, and the waters directly around the island. Some of its land is within the reservation of the Bay Mills Indian Community, a federally recognized tribe and band of Chippewa who have long been in the region of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Native Americans make up one-third of the population on the island. History The Ojibwe (known as Chippewa in the United States) occupied the island and nearby areas for at least 500 years. Dafter Township
Dafter Township is a civil township of Chippewa County, Michigan, Chippewa County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,263 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census. Communities *Dafter is a small unincorporated community located about a mile southwest of the junction of M-28 (Michigan highway), M-28 with Interstate 75 in Michigan, I-75 at within the drainage basin of the Waiska River. Founded as a lumber settlement, it was given a post office named "Stevensburgh" in January 1879, with George Stevens as the first postmaster.
