Sault Ste. Marie (provincial Electoral District)
Sault Ste. Marie is a provincial electoral district in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, representing the City of Sault Ste. Marie. History The riding was created in 1902 from part of Algoma East, and originally consisted of a large section of Algoma District from the boundary of Thunder Bay District to the mouth of the Echo River. It has essentially had the same boundaries (that of the city of Sault Ste. Marie) since the 1966 redistribution. Prior to 1996, Ontario was divided into the same electoral districts as those used for federal electoral purposes. They were redistributed whenever a readjustment took place at the federal level. In 2005, legislation was passed by the Legislature to divide Ontario into 107 electoral districts, beginning with the next provincial election in 2007. Algoma District, Ontario
Algoma District is a district and census division in Northeastern Ontario in the Canadian province of Ontario. The name was created by an American ethnologist, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864), who was appointed Indian agent to the Ojibwe in Sault Ste. Marie region in 1822. "Al" is derived from Algonquin, while "goma" is a variant of gomee, meaning lake or water. Algoma District has shoreline along Lake Superior and Lake Huron. It has an international border crossing to the American state of Michigan, at Sault Ste. Marie. Historically, it was known for its lumber and mining industries. The rugged scenery of the region has inspired works by Canadian artists, particularly the Group of Seven. Colin Campbell (Ontario Politician)
Colin Alexander "Collie" Campbell (17 January 1901 – 25 December 1978) was a Canadian mining engineer, politician and curling administrator. Campbell was the president of the International Curling Federation from 1968 to 1978 and served as a Liberal Party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Shedden, Ontario. Biography Campbell attended school at Lawrence Station and high school in Dutton before further studies at Queen's University. His father was active in local politics for more than three decades. Clayton Harry Lyons (January 8, 1900 – September 4, 1962), commonly known as Harry Lyons,"Liberal Platform 'Raft' Born of Political Expediency". Arthur Wishart
Arthur Allison Wishart, (June 11, 1903 – November 23, 1986) was a politician and in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1963 to 1971. He was a Progressive Conservative member who served in the cabinets of John Robarts and Bill Davis. Background Born in New Brunswick, Wishart obtained his law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1930, and then practised in Windsor and Blind River. John Rhodes (Canadian Politician)
John Reginald Rhodes (September 26, 1929 – September 25, 1978) was a broadcaster and politician from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1971 to 1978. He died while still in office on a trip to the Middle East in 1978. Russ Ramsay
Russell Harold Ramsay (August 5, 1928 — February 9, 2003) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1978 to 1985, and was a cabinet minister in the government of William Davis. Ramsay was a member of the Progressive Conservative Party. Background Ramsay was born in Sault Ste. Marie, and was educated in that city and at Queen's University in Kingston. Karl Morin-Strom
Karl Arvid Morin-Strom (born June 27, 1952) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1985 to 1990 as a member of the New Democratic Party. Background Strom was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He attended Sir James Dunn Collegiate and Vocational School. Showing an aptitude for mathematics, he participated in contests provincially and nationally at both the Junior (grades 9-11) and Senior (grades 12-13) levels. Carmen Provenzano
Carmen Provenzano (February 3, 1942 – July 27, 2005) was a Canadian politician. He represented the Sault Ste. Marie electoral district in the House of Commons of Canada from 1997 to 2004. He was a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. Carmen Provenzano was a graduate of St. Mary's College in the Sault. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Windsor, and a law degree (LLB) from Queen's University in Kingston. On graduation, he started his legal career in the city of Sault Ste. Anthony A. Martin (born August 31, 1948) is a Canadian politician. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1990 to 2003, representing the constituency of Sault Ste.
