Saudi Arabia At The 2016 Summer Olympics
Saudi Arabia competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's eleventh appearance at the Summer Olympics. The Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee sent a team of eleven athletes, seven men and four women, to compete in five different sports at the Olympics, doubling its female participation after two women attended the London Games four years earlier. Discus thrower Sultan Mubarak Al-Dawoodi, along with distance runners Moukhled Al-Outaibi and Sarah Attar, were the only Saudi Arabian athletes to have participated at the previous Games, with the rest of the field making their Olympic debut in Rio de Janeiro. Meanwhile, judoka Sulaiman Hamad (men's 66 kg) led the Saudi delegation as the flag bearer and team captain in the opening ceremony. Saudi Olympic & Paralympic Committee (IOC code: KSA; ar, اللجنة الأولمبية السعودية وأولمبياد المعاقين) is the National Olympic Committee and the National Paralympic Committee representing Saudi Arabia. Until the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Saudi Arabia was one of three countries that had never had a female competitor at the games. The other two countries, Qatar and Brunei, also selected women to compete for the first time. The International Judo Federation (IJF) was founded in July 1951. The IJF was originally composed of judo federations from Europe and Argentina. Countries from four continents were affiliated over the next ten years. Today the IJF has 200 National Federations on all continents.
