Saud Nasser Al-Saud Al-Sabah
Saud Nasser Al-Saud Al-Sabah (3 October 1944 – 21 January 2012) was a Kuwaiti politician and diplomat. Biography Sabah was born on 3 October 1944. Sabah served as ambassador of Kuwait to Great Britain from 1975 to 1981. He then served as Kuwaiti ambassador to the United States during the First Gulf War, more specifically from 1981 to 1992. In 1992, he was appointed information minister and served in the post until March 1998. He was oil minister from March 1998 to 2000. He resigned from the post due to an explosion that killed five workers at the country's largest oil refinery. He and his daughter Nayirah were reportedly involved in Citizens for a Free Kuwait, a front group established by the Kuwaiti government to promote US involvement in the Gulf War. This involvement was covered in the 1992 documentary film ''To Sell a War''. Sabah died of cancer on 21 January 2012. ''To Sell a War'' is a documentary film, first aired in December 1992 as part of CBC programme '' The Fifth Estate''. The programme was directed and produced by Neil Docherty. It chronicles the Citizens for a Free Kuwait campaign efforts to spin public relations sentiment in the United States in favor of the Gulf War, focusing on the story of Nurse Nayirah, who was, in fact, Nayirah al-Sabah, the daughter of Kuwait's ambassador to the United States Saud Nasir Al-Sabah. The House of Sabah ( ar, آل صباح ''Āl Ṣubāḥ'') is the ruling family of Kuwait. History Origin The Al Sabah family originate from the Bani Utbah confederation. Prior to settling in Kuwait, the Al Sabah family were expelled from Umm Qasr in southern Iraq by the Ottomans due to their predatory habits of preying on caravans in Basra and trading ships in Shatt al-Arab. According to one oral tradition, the Al Sabah family settled across various regions in southern Iran and Iraq, until they finally settled in what is now Kuwait around the early 1700s. According to another oral tradition, told to the Political Agent by Shaikh Abdulla, the Sabahs fled drought in central Arabia in 1710. Citizens for a Free Kuwait (CFK) was an astroturf operation established by the Kuwaiti government to persuade the American public to look favourably on US military action in the Persian Gulf (the subsequent Operation Desert Storm). The Nayirah testimony was false testimony given before the United States Congressional Human Rights Caucus on October 10, 1990, by a 15-year-old girl who was publicly identified at the time by her first name, Nayirah. The testimony was widely publicized, and was cited numerous times by United States senators and President George H. W. Bush in their rationale to support Kuwait in the Gulf War. In 1992, it was revealed that Nayirah's last name was Al-Ṣabaḥ ( ar, نيرة الصباح) and that she was the daughter of Saud Al-Sabah, the Kuwaiti ambassador to the United States.
