Satya (magazine)
''Satya'' was an American monthly magazine which covered vegetarianism, animal rights, environmentalism and social justice issues. It was co-founded by Beth Gould and Martin Rowe in 1994 and released its final issue in 2007. Scholar Gary Francione says ''Satya'' became the main journal that promoted animal welfare after the demise of '' The Animals' Agenda'' in 2002. The magazine was available free at restaurants and health food stores in New York City and its content was eclectic, blending lifestyle articles with political and intellectual ones, and tackling both animal rights and social justice issues. ''Satya'' was named for Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of Satyagraha and its stated mission was to increase "dialogue among activists from diverse backgrounds and engaging readers in ways to integrate compassion into their daily lives." Howard Lyman
Howard F. Lyman (born September 18, 1938, in Great Falls, Montana) is an American farmer and animal rights activist known for promoting vegan nutrition and organic farming. In 1997 he was awarded the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award for his leadership in the animal rights movement. Biography Lyman was raised as a fourth generation rancher on a farm that produced dairy and meat commodities. He attended Montana State University and graduated with a B.S. degree in general agriculture in 1961. Upon graduation, he spent two years in the United States Army before returning to work on the farm. From 1963 to 1983 he was actively engaged in animal and grain production. HappyCow is an online service that lists sources of vegan, vegetarian and healthy food. Background and content HappyCow was founded in 1999 as a world guide to vegetarian and vegan restaurants. The crowd-sourced site contains listings of over 50,000 businesses in 180 countries and more than 140,000 reviews. Restaurants are categorised as either vegan, vegetarian, or veg-friendly. The initial definition for veg-friendly was based on a minimum menu content being at least 60% vegetarian. This has since been modified into a more flexible set of guidelines based on the alternative availability of vegan food in the area. Veganism
Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal product—particularly in diet—and an associated philosophy that rejects the commodity status of animals. An individual who follows the diet or philosophy is known as a vegan. Distinctions may be made between several categories of veganism. Dietary vegans, also known as "strict vegetarians", refrain from consuming meat, eggs, dairy products, and any other animal-derived substances. An ethical vegan is someone who not only follows a plant-based diet but extends the philosophy into other areas of their lives, opposes the use of animals for any purpose, and tries to avoid any cruelty and exploitation of all animals including humans. Bruce Gregory Friedrich (born August 7, 1969) is co-founder and president of The Good Food Institute (GFI), a Y Combinator funded non-profit that promotes plant- and cell-based alternatives to animal products.
