The thirty-seventh season of ''Saturday Night Live'', an American sketch comedy series, originally aired in the United States on NBC between September 24, 2011, and May 19, 2012. Cast The season began with minimal changes to the cast, as everyone from the prior year returned. The only major change was Nasim Pedrad being upgraded to repertory status. Vanessa Bayer, Paul Brittain, Taran Killam, and Jay Pharoah all remained as featured players. Brittain, who had joined the show for Season 36 alongside Bayer, Killam, and Pharoah, exited abruptly halfway through this season, making his final appearance on January 14, 2012. Following Brittain's departure, impressionist and writer Kate McKinnon, previously a cast member on ''The Big Gay Sketch Show'', joined the cast mid-season, as a featured player for the last five episodes of the season, making her debut on April 7, 2012, following a March 28, 2012, report of her being hired. The thirty-sixth season of '' Saturday Night Live'', an American sketch comedy series, originally aired in the United States on NBC between September 25, 2010, and May 21, 2011. Longtime announcer Don Pardo announced that he would pre-record his parts from his home in Arizona rather than perform live in New York City. Cast Prior to the start of the season, longtime cast member Will Forte left the show after a total of eight seasons from 2002 to 2010. Featured player Jenny Slate was let go from the show after one season. Abby Elliott and Bobby Moynihan were both upgraded to repertory status, while Nasim Pedrad remained a featured player. History This season is notable for the people who hosted the show. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, an ''SNL'' cast member from 1982 to 1985 under Dick Ebersol, became the first former female cast member to come back and host the show (and also the third cast member from ''Seinfeld'' to host). Sarah Schneider (born September 10, 1983) is an American writer, actress, and comedian. She got her start in entertainment as a writer and actress for the comedy website CollegeHumor before becoming a writer for the television sketch comedy series '' Saturday Night Live'', where she worked from 2011 to 2017, including a season as co-head writer alongside writing partner Chris Kelly. ''Weekend Update'' is a ''Saturday Night Live'' sketch and satirical news program that comments on and parodies current events. It is the show's longest-running recurring sketch, having been on since the show's first broadcast, and is typically presented in the middle of the show immediately after the first musical performance.
