''Saturday-Night Story'' was a British television programme which aired on the BBC from 1948 to 1953. In the series, a person would read a story. These people included Algernon Blackwood and John Slater (actor), John Slater. Algernon Blackwood
Algernon Henry Blackwood, CBE (14 March 1869 – 10 December 1951) was an English broadcasting narrator, journalist, novelist and short story writer, and among the most prolific ghost story writers in the history of the genre. The literary critic S. T. Joshi stated, "His work is more consistently meritorious than any weird writer's except Dunsany's." and that his short story collection '' Incredible Adventures'' (1914) "may be the premier weird collection of this or any other century". Life and work Blackwood was born in Shooter's Hill (now part of south-east London, then part of north-west Kent). Between 1871 and 1880, he lived at Crayford Manor House, Crayford and he was educated at Wellington College. His father, Sir Stevenson Arthur Blackwood, was a Post Office administrator; his mother, Harriet Dobbs, was the widow of the 6th Duke of Manchester. John Slater (actor)
John Slater (22 August 1916 – 9 January 1975) was an English character actor who usually portrayed lugubrious, amiable cockney types. Biography Slater's father was an antiques dealer. After attending St Clement Danes Grammar School in Hammersmith, Slater began acting in farce at the Whitehall Theatre. He first appeared on film in 1938, remaining active in the industry up to his death. He was a familiar face in British films of the 1940s and appeared in many classic films of the period, including ''The Day Will Dawn'' (1942, US title ''The Avengers''), ''Went the Day Well?'' (1942), ''We Dive at Dawn'' (1943), ''A Canterbury Tale'' (1944), ''The Seventh Veil'' (1945), ''It Always Rains on Sunday'' (1947) and ''Passport to Pimlico'' (1949). He was also a singer, and made three solo 78rpm records for Columbia in 1953 and 1954. "The Lady from the Sea" is a 1953 episode of '' Sunday Night Theatre'' that is significant as one of the earliest extant examples of British television drama, along with an earlier episode of the series titled "It is Midnight, Doctor Schweitzer" and the first two episodes of '' The Quatermass Experiment''. An adaptation of the 1888 play by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, it was performed twice, first on 10 May 1953 and again on the 14th. ''Telestory'' is an Australian television series which aired 1961–1962. Produced by Artransa Park and aired on ATN-7, it was a 15-minute series in which an actor would read from a book. The first season consisted of Leonard Teale reading '' The Sundowners'', while the second season consisted of Gordon Glenwright reading from ''They're a Weird Mob''. Very basic television, it aired towards the end of the day's schedule, at time slots such as 10:10PM on Monday and 11:35PM on Friday. Additional episodes were planned but do not seem to have been produced. The version of ''The Sundowners'' utilised stills from the film to illustrate the story. ''Monodrama Theater'', also known as ''Mono-Drama Theatre'', was a late night television series which aired on the DuMont Television Network weekdays at 11pm ET from May 1952 to December 1953. Production background The series consisted of a single actor or actress performing in front of a black curtain, or bare stage, with recorded music cues, in an example of monodrama. Some sources suggest this series, produced by Lawrence Menkin (1911-2000), also aired episodes of '' One Man's Experience'' and '' One Woman's Experience'', both also produced by Menkin. Filming took place at a tiny studio at 515 Madison Avenue. In 1953, in a series of episodes of ''Monodrama Theater'', actor Jack Manning performed a one-man show of ''Hamlet''. ''Saturday Night Theatre'' was a long-running radio drama strand on BBC Radio 4. The strand showcased feature-length, middle-brow single plays on Saturday evenings for more than 50 years, having been launched in April 1943. The plays featured in the strand included stage plays, book adaptations and original dramatisations. For most of its history, programmes ran for 90 minutes and were largely entertainment-centred, such as thrillers, comedies and mysteries. ''Saturday Night Theatre'' was noted as the major drama of the week on BBC Radio 4, until it was scrapped as a programme strand in 1996. Shorter plays continued to be broadcast on Radio 4 on Saturday evenings from 1996 until the relaunch of the channel's schedule in April 1998 by James Boyle, when single dramas were removed from the Saturday evening schedule.
