These Old Shades
''These Old Shades'' (1926) is a Georgian (set around 1755–56) romance novel written by British novelist Georgette Heyer (1902–1974). It was an instant success, and established her as a writer. It falls into the category of historical romance. Title The novel's title is taken from Austin Dobson's epilogue poem to his collection of essays ''Eighteenth Century Vignettes''. Plot summary Fortune favours Justin Alastair, the uncanny and notorious Duke of Avon, casting in his way, one Paris night, the means to revenge himself on his enemy, the Comte de Saint-Vire. Avon literally collides with an abused boy, Léon Bonnard, whose red hair, deep blue eyes and (improbably) black eyebrows proclaim him a child of the Comte. Not knowing the exact relationship between the boy and Saint-Vire, Avon purchases him from his brother, a tavern keeper. He takes the boy as his page, and as such can parade the boy throughout French high society, even at a party at Versailles held by Louis XV. ...

Les Vampires
''Les Vampires'' is a 1915–16 French silent crime serial film written and directed by Louis Feuillade. Set in Paris, it stars Édouard Mathé, Musidora and Marcel Lévesque. The main characters are a journalist and his friend who become involved in trying to uncover and stop a bizarre underground Apache gang, known as The Vampires (who are not the mythological beings their name suggests). The serial consists of ten episodes, which vary greatly in length. Being roughly 7 hours long, it is considered one of the longest films ever made. It was produced and distributed by Feuillade's company Gaumont. Due to its stylistic similarities with Feuillade's other crime serials ''Fantômas'' and ''Judex'', the three are often considered a trilogy. Fresh from the success of Feuillade's previous serial, ''Fantômas'', and facing competition from rival company Pathé, Feuillade made the film quickly and inexpensively with very little written script. Upon its initial release ''Les Vampires' ...
