Maan Sassen
Emmanuel Marie Joseph Antony "Maan" Sassen (11 September 1911 – 20 December 1995) was a Dutch politician who served as European Commissioner for Competition in the Rey Commission from 1967 to 1971. Career Sassen studied law and earned a doctorate. From 1936 to 1950 he worked as a lawyer and district attorney. In 1939 he became a member of the States of North Brabant. During World War Two he was interned at Kamp Sint-Michielsgestel. In 1946 he was elected to the Dutch House of Representatives for the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP). He served as Minister responsible for the Dutch Colonies (1948–1949) and as European Commissioner for Competition in the Rey Commission from 1967 to 1971. Saskia Sassen
Saskia Sassen (born January 5, 1947) is a Dutch-American sociologist noted for her analyses of globalization and international human migration. She is a professor of sociology at Columbia University in New York City, and the London School of Economics. The term '' global city'' was coined and popularized by Sassen in her 1991 work ''The Global City: New York, London, Tokyo''. Education From 1966, Sassen spent a year each at the Université de Poitiers, France, the Università degli Studi di Roma, and the University of Buenos Aires, for studies in philosophy and political science. From 1969, Sassen studied sociology and economics at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, where she obtained a M.A. in 1971 and a Ph.D. degree in 1974, under the direction of Fabio Dasilva. Wilhelmus Antonius Sassen (born 16 April 1918 – died 2002) was a Dutch collaborator, Nazi journalist and a member of the ''Waffen-SS''. He became known around 1960 as "the interviewer of Adolf Eichmann". Biography Willem Sassen was born in Geertruidenberg, Netherlands. He was raised in a traditional Roman Catholic family in North Brabant and attended a '' gymnasium'' in Neerbosch near Nijmegen and in Breda. His father was impressed by the fascist ideas of the Zwart Front (literally ' Black Front'). Sassen decided against becoming a priest choosing to study law in Leuven and Ghent instead. As a student, he was a member of the German-Flemish workers' group DeVlag. When Sassen visited the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, his admiration for Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany grew. Because of Sassen's pro-Nazi political activities, the authorities expelled him from Belgium, so he was unable to finish his law studies. Sassen is an '' Ortsgemeinde'' – a municipality belonging to a ''Verbandsgemeinde'', a kind of collective municipality – in the Vulkaneifel district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It belongs to the ''Verbandsgemeinde'' of Kelberg, whose seat is in the like-named municipality. Name The municipality's name, Sassen, is derived from the German word ''Ansassen'' or ''Beisassen'', words once used to designate people who were not local, but rather had come from elsewhere to settle. The area around Ülmen and Ürsfeld was already settled when others came along to settle at the village now known as Sassen. Another explanation, however, is that the name arose from transplanted Saxons brought to the Eifel by Charlemagne. A Carthusian monk wrote in an account that Charlemagne also removed Franks from the Eifel to the Saxons’ homeland as part of his campaign to break Saxon resistance once and for all.
